DAN CLOUTIER PC - 70 Card Lot (Part 1)

Over the next few weeks I'll be slowly but steadily showing off my new 70 card Cloutier lot I picked up a few weeks back. It's just the kind of statistic pumping lot I needed. It also promised 2 GU Cloutier cards along with an AUTO, all of which were not doubles in my collection.

Since I don't have a heck of a lot of time, let's look at one page of cards plus a GU hockey card.

As you can see this page has just about all the variety you can get. From vertical to horizontal to die-cut and chrome, base, parallel, insert etc. There are some really great action shots and designs in this bunch. My favourite card is actually the insert in the middle row to the left called "Showstoppers". It has a nice texture and looks really nice in person.

Most of the back designs flow with the front. As you can see from the bottom right card, that is a BTP redemption program. Cloutier's card was worth 1 point and if accumulated with others you would get some sort of redemption card.

Here is an extremely crooked scan of one of the GU Cloutier cards I picked up from the lot. I think this card is so poorly/cheese-ily designed that it looks cool. I especially like the early 2000's "*Authentic Game-Worn Jersey*" stamp of approval they put on the front. The jersey is all white and has a very heavy feel to it. You can tell it is not as breathable even compared to what we wear 10 years later.

Finally, I'm going to go out and say that even though my Canucks didn't win and the favourites (the Rangers) got kicked out (which I had them in Casey's pool) I'm still sticking with a team for the SCF and that is the New Jersey Devils. Game just started too, so catch you later!

PACK RIP - 2011-12 Between the Pipes (An AUTO from the 70's)

It's hard to believe its been a week already, I have a enormous video project due for my Francais 12 class and I am positive it will be the death of me! Anyways, a couple weeks back I picked up a pack of this years rendition of BTP.

When the store clerk picked one pack out for me from the 2/3 filled box of cards I was really hoping for a GU card or an AUTO and if not that, than an insert or one of the few Dan Cloutier cards there are in this years product.

I ended up coming out with a pretty nice AUTO but, before we take a look at that, let's see the variety of base I pulled:

Each of these six cards come from a different subset in the base (Expansion Tandems, Stars of the Game, Future Stars, 70's, 80's, 90's) so it looks like I'm missing just three subsets (00's, La Belle Province and Stars and Stripes).

My luck that day got me one nice looking AUTO from the 70's, take a look...

One word. Classy. Now that's how you sign a hockey card! Gilles is more recognized for his time in Boston but he also played a couple decent years with Detroit. Everything about that signature is proper and well done. Good on ya Gilles! Thanks for giving me hope for some of these younger hockey players to improve their signatures.

On another note, I was down in the States yesterday and a quick stop at Target and a 20 dollar bill got me this bad boy:

It's a hockey value cube! To the left is a small box of the "Rookies and Traded" update set of Score and to the right are four packs of cards along with a bunch of valueless base to bring the total of cards to 175. The cube promises two AUTO's so keep a watch around here to see what I got!

DAN CLOUTIER PC - Stickin' It

I guess you could call this my first official show and tell Dan Cloutier PC post. One recent pick up brings the most diverse GU Memorabilia card in my entire collection. As you might have guessed this card includes a piece of Clout's stick!

The card comes from ITG's Between the Pipes set which is my favourite modern product from the last 10 years. But what makes this card even better compared to BTP of today is that they use to have an NHL license, so this card comes from past years (2001-02 to be exact).

WOW! This card is awesome! I now feel I have a legitimate Dan Cloutier PC happening and this card gets me excited to see what else is out there! There are so many great Cloutier GU cards out there for dirt cheap (compared to other players) and this card has just wet my appetite! Including some brand spanking new 2011-12 Between the Pipes (nice pick ITG)!

As you can see though, the stick is a little crooked. I don't know why and when I saw it in the scan on eBay I thought it was a matter of careful adjustment, but unfortunately, it's glued on pretty good so that thing ain't moving! I like how the stick still has a couple of colours on it and the jersey piece is a nice silver textured piece.

This card books for about 25 bucks in tip top shape so for 10 dollars shipped I was a happy camper! Truly an awesome piece to add to the "hits" portion of my Dan Cloutier PC.

But that is only one of the four "hits" I received of Dan Cloutier from eBay, along with a boatload of neat base, parallels, inserts and rookies! Stay tuned for those posts coming soon!

INSERT IDEAS - 2011-12 Score First Goal

I've decided to pick another Score insert set for my "Insert Ideas" post today. This set I think will fair better in terms of overall score compared to the last. Today, we are going to discuss the "First Goal" insert set.

Let's take a look at the front of the card:

NAME: First Goal
YEAR: 2011-12

I picked up this insert card from Kyle in a trade a week back. The entire premise behind the insert set is to show a past rookies first goal. For example, Linus Omark's rookie season was in 2010-11 so this card shows the exact moment when Omark scored his first NHL goal from the season before.

I'm sure this insert set has been done before although no specific sets come to my mind. But I really like the idea of the insert set and the fact that I can't remember any other particular sets that were similar help to boost its mark for idea.

As for the pictures they use, this is where it gets tricky. The only pictures they can use is of the players celebration after their first goal. Therefore, if the celebration was crappy, you get a crappy picture. But sometimes you'll get the odd shot of a player smiling or in shock that makes the picture stand out. The Omark card is kind of boring though... The Taylor Hall is my favourite picture from the set.

This card is what makes me appreciate the pictures in this set even more. I love the look of relief on Subban's face and even more his two teammates holding their arms up beside them. The picture is framed really well.

The design on the front of the card is simple and 90's like. The "First Goal" lettering on the top reminds me of something that would come out of a Pro Set subset or something. It looks classic and flows well from left to right. The picture takes up most of the card and is not cluttered which I appreciate. The basic name and team sits on the bottom, but most importantly is the date of the goal that sits on the right side.

The back is where the design loses marks. The reuse of the picture in this case is acceptable, it's more the left two thirds of the card that worries me. First is the GIGANTIC logo right in the middle. The point of this card is not team based, instead it is player based so why did they have to throw a HUMUNGOUS logo randomly in the mix? The name and position on the top along with stars is a huge waste of space. I would re-design it so that you have the logo, name, position and date of goal in the bar above. Leaving that white patch in the middle for a write-up. The paragraph mentions the date, game and final score of the game. I think they could even add how they scored. For example, "Subban scored on the PP when he got a pass from _____ to rip a slapshot home to make the game 1-0". Get it? So you could have more info on what happened and less about simply what team he plays for.

Player selection can't get too out of hand considering their isn't a huge list of players to chose from. That being said though, nobody wants to get a card of a player they don't know, so by keeping the player selection among those young guys that are better known is a plus.

There are 15 cards in the set and with guys like Hall, Subban, Omark, Hodgson, Tatar, Skinner, Condra, Fowler etc. I'm liking the variety.

Overall I really like the insert set and might even think of pursuing it, especially since one of my PC guys is in it.

PACK RIP - 2011-12 Elite

Elite is another mid range product that has recently been released by Panini. Although it seems to fall behind the recent releases of Between the Pipes and SpX, I still managed to pick up one lone pack just to appease my appetite.

This years Panini Elite product comes with 5 cards in a single pack and 20 packs per box. The odds of me pulling anything good aren't fantastic but at the same time, it is doable.

Let's take a look at what I got:

These cards reflect dust on my scanner like no other product can. These things are drenched in foil (a la Panini) and are prone to finger prints. Although a lot of people have been complaining about the design, I don't mind it personally. It's simple and it sticks to its 90's roots.

The fifth card of the pack was this:

Man my scanner is dusty. Anyways, this AUTO is of the rookie variety and comes from Tim Erixon. Or if you are going by the signature it's of "TiEix". Obviously code.

I really like the choice of colour for the border and how the ink of the AUTO matches the border! I think this is a really nice looking card, especially with the blue, white and red of the Rangers jersey.

TRADE #7 - Beware a Huge Hockey Card Trade

Back when I was in Hawaii (which feels like an eternity ago) a random reader of my blog who I had never been in contact with e-mailed me. He was requesting a trade for some of my new cards I had pulled from Crown Royale. At first, I was a bit weary, like anybody would be. But as we e-mailed back and forth I got to know him and his personality and genuinely knew that he was a good guy and a legit trader.

After a couple weeks of negotiating the trade that involved only a couple cards at the beginning expanded into a pretty big lot of cards going each way. If you haven't seen Kyle's breakdown of the trade yet, I'll show you how it went down:

So that's a deal that includes 5 AUTO's, 3 GU and 1 GU/AUTO not to mention valuable RC's along with some nice inserts and base galore. Now that's what I call a trade!

Let's take a quick glance as at some of the extras:

A few Pinnacle base of my Vancouver Canucks to get us up and running. This was my first taste of this years Pinnacle product, I guess it didn't implement a very strong impression on my from last year.

Next is the "Quest for the Cup" Luongo parallel, which I have never seen before and a neat insert of Linus Omark from this years score. In fact this very card will be used in my next blogpost of "Insert Ideas" (stay tuned for that).

These are some pretty awesome extras Kyle threw in. Actually the bottom left card is the Federov RC he promised me and it's looking like it's in decent shape. This gives me some more Goalie Project material, thanks Kyle!

Now onto some AUTO's! This first one was sent as a thank you for sending Kyle an extra bubble mailer cause he didn't have anymore laying around. No problem Kyle, and thanks for the extra TTM!

Next up is the second most nutcase commentator in professional hockey - Mr. Glenn Healy everybody. Behind Pierre Mcguire (formerly on TSN), Healy must say the most stupid things on HNIC. But at least he keeps things interesting. Of course, I mean no disrespect to Glenn, he made a solid name for himself in net as a pro goalie in the NHL.

WOWZA! Jeremy Roenick, who would've thunk it. A nice AUTO from Jeremy who is a true household name and legend! Nuff said!

Sweet a sig of #1 Roberto Luongo! Kyle says this was an IP AUTO, so that makes it even cooler (for him at least). Hard to believe though that the ~~starting~~ goalie of my Nucks isn't my favourite card I received. GASP! Who could it be?

NICE! What an awesome signature from a truly incredible and classy hockey player! The blue ink is a bit smudged but who cares, this card is fantastic! Teemu and I have had an encounter at a Canucks game once. Not only that, but other stories I have heard of him make him one of the classiest in the NHL. Truly an incredible signature to have!

The last AUTO I received was a mystery before it arrived. We decided to also add a one for one certified AUTO trade. I gave him this Ryan Malone AUTO, and he gave me this:

I apologize for the tilted scan but as you can still blatantly see, this is a sticker AUTO of May Ray. Who knows how long he'll be on the Canucks? But for now, this card will remained another cherished Canucks AUTO.

Last but certainly not least is this long awaited addition to my Dan Cloutier PC. I made a couple HUGE purchases and I mean really cool purchases toward this PC in these past weeks and can't wait to share the goods.

This card has been on the radar for a while and being a pretty easy card to get your hands on I didn't want to get a copy on eBay for 3 bucks so I waited it out and got this card basically for free through trade.

Pack Rip - Canucks Mystery Lot

My splurging on eBay has been strong and steady and although my next purchase is one that might see "out there", I'm glad I pulled the trigger. Saying that, this lot did come with a risk. The lot promised either a patch, jersey, auto, rookie or the dreaded serial numbered hit. So for $12 all in, I took the risk of getting the pack with a card numbered to /4999999999 and having that be the "hit" of the lot. Thankfully that was not the case and I actually got MORE than previously expected.

Let's start with a little taste of base:

As you can see from these first two base cards, there was a very wide variety of products, year and players. I already have the McLean but of course any card for my Goalie Project is accepted with open arms.

Continuing on here we have a "Gold Medallion" parallel from the Fleer Ultra set. I'm pretty sure these were inserted 1 a pack so nothing too special to write home about here. Plus a Big Bert base!

Woah there! That is a hell of a lot of colour all on one scan! From left to right we have one of the most trippy base cards out there from "Pacific Revolution". The middle card was NOT my "hit" card of the lot, but it is technically a RC. Finally all the way on the right is an OPC "Season Highlights" from when Luongo was actually considered a saviour in Vancouver.

Hey look another rookie! This time of someone I actually really do like - Jannik Hansen! This is definitely a cool RC, and even though I already have a RC of Jannik, this one is different. The Naslund insert is a pretty sharp looking card too.

Next is only ONE hit I got from this mystery lot. Let's take a gander...

Not bad, but nothing to write home about. Steve Kariya never really made it big in the NHL and I have an absolute boatload of his RC's sitting in binders so why not have an autographed card of his right? So far the pack hasn't been a complete disappointment but it hasn't knocked my socks off either and definitely isn't worth my 12 bucks.

But then...

I saw this...

Okay so it's no patch card or super low serial numbered but hey, it's a piece of Henrik Sedin's jersey! That's a-okay in my eyes anytime! Plus it's not an all white swatch, which is always nice. With this card being of a former Art Ross winner, you can't go wrong. Oh and he's also the captain of my Vancouver Canucks!

So I would say this pack was pretty successful. A couple cards toward my Goalie Project, two rookies, a GU card and an AUTO.

As for more hockey card news, let's just say, there is a lot. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've picked up a ton of new GU and AUTO's. Some from packs, some from eBay and some from trades. I can't wait to get them all scanned and ready to go!

Trade #6 - The Goalie Controversy

Recently, Sal from Puck Junk and I worked on a nice small trade that sent some nice additions either way. What I was not expecting were the extra goodies he kindly threw in. These were especially cool since I hadn't seen any of these cards prior to this!

Kick ass sticker!

These are neat, I guess they're part of some sort of card/hockey game. Kinda like an older version of the Puck Attax game cards. Probably would've played these if I knew about these in elementary school.

This card was traded for my Erik Condra YG card. A nice pic of Richard Brodeur and from a fairly regular sub-set in OPC.

Now we can consider the last two cards from the trade and thus the reason for my title - "The Goalie Controversy".

I really am split as to what I want to happen and what I think will happen. There are great arguments on both sides. But as for now let's see which goalie won out of these two cards. Starting with Bobby Lu...

Roberto's card is from this year's Upper Deck Series 1 and is a nice clean blue swatch. Only thing I don't like about these cards is how small the swatch of jersey is. But still a nice addition to the Goalie Project and my growing GU collection.

I've been hunting down this card for awhile. This one card is really the one I was looking for in this otherwise mediocre set from Panini. Again this cards come with a nice clean blue swatch. This card also gets extra points for having a bigger swatch window. The designs of these cards are actually really nice. The front has team colours which I'm a big fan of and the up close shot of Schneids mask and face is pretty cool on the back.

Although these are both fairly generic GU cards, I think Schneider has the edge in this showdown.

A Tiger Mailday

Tiger Williams is more famously known as the PIM's guy. The rough and tough customer that wasn't afraid to drop his mitts to protect one of his teammates. In Vancouver though, he also known for this:

"Oh look at that Tiger!" Yup, Dave was quite the legend in Vancity. The flying V is what I associate with Tiger and the "riding stick" celebration is one for the ages.

Needless to say a Williams GU or AUTO card has been on my want list for quite some time. I've looked at more expensive pieces all the way down to what I have to show today.

Since my patience has finally ran out and I saw a quick BIN of $0.99 with Free shipping, I pounced on Tiger (no pun intended...maybe a little).

Pretty much as basic as one can get. Small squared, plain white swatch, but what kinda stings about this one is the fact it is "Event Used". The fact that this wasn't worn in an "Official NHL Game" bums me out a little.

In fact, although I am a jersey/mem advocate I think it is necessary to take out the crap. Which is "Event Worn" jerseys. Let's not get too hasty, I don't mind manufactured patches but when I buy a card I expect it to be at the very least worn in an All-Star game or something, not outside their local Costco.

Anyways, that's not the point. I've added another jersey card to the collection and that of an iconic Canuck in an iconic Canuck jersey!

Only about a week ago Casey e-mailed me and asked for my address. I really didn't know what to think of it, to tell you the truth I thought he wanted it just in case I won the contest he is holding. So I was quite pleasantly surprised to open what I thought was an eBay bubble mailer but was actually a nice package of cards from Casey.

Then I figured out the motivation for the kind gesture:

I was able to decipher the scribble ;) (Brett would be proud) and it says : "Michael - go nucks? blech!" Well I have to thank you Casey for your kind condolences! The cards are just the beginning of my recovery process.

Let's take a look:

We start with four cards from my favourite low end set. The Salo is also a glossy parallel.

These next four cards are from last years Upper Deck Series 1, luckily I only had the Kesler so the other 3 cards are brand spankin' new.

A nice recent card of Alex Edler, it's really too bad Edler played so poorly for the Canucks. A better performance out of him may have not caused us Game 2.

The controversy has officially taken a huge twist. With Bobby Lu saying he would waive his no trade clause, could Schneids be our starter next season? Who knows, only Mike Gillis (and I don't even think he knows either). If anything I feel comfortable with either goalie in net, although Cory does seem to have the confidence to jump to the starter position next season.

This was a SWEET card to find in the package. A 2011-12 QUAD Ruby /100 of Roberto Luongo. Well in this showdown of hockey cards, Luongo has the edge over Schneider for sure.

Thanks for a couple awesome cards for my Goalie Project.

Last but not least is this beauty vintage of Andre Boudrias. This very nicely conditioned and centred card comes from 1970-71 Topps. The classic pink background against the vintage Canucks jerseys make this card a welcomed piece of cardboard in my collection.

Thank you so much Casey for the great lot of cards! It's always nice to see the generosity in the hockey blogging community (even if our teams are mortal enemies) ;)

Jersey (or Sweater) Card Lot

I've been dabbling in and out of eBay lately and a small lot of 6 cards caught my fancy. Those 6 cards are all memorabilia cards and so I thought I might give it a shot. Sure enough I won the auction and I received my first of what I expect to be about 6 or so bubble envelopes in the mail today.

I bought the lot for a few reasons. First, it included one Canuck GU card and quite a big name at that! Next, there was not one single white swatch in the entire lot and I really appreciate a nice coloured swatch (especially Philly orange)! Third, I really wanted to bulk my ~~jersey~~ (I'm learning Cap'n) sweater card collection. Also, these kinda lots act for great trade bait! Lastly, it was cheap and I love cheap hockey cards!

I'll list them from highest numbered to lowest. Starting with two unnumbered cards:

Nothing extra ordinary so far. Just your basic UD Series 1 GU hockey card. Rask is the back-up goalie for the Bruins, I would have taken Thomas over Rask since I'm not a huge fan of Tuukka. I seem to have the Bruin bug this year, I pulled a dual jersey of Thomas and Rask in a pack rip of 11-12 Artifacts.

In fact this is one of two Bruins cards that are in this lot. Both are for trade by the way.

This was a neat pick-up for a few reasons. For starters you don't pull OPC GU cards that often from what I know about the product. Also, this is unnumbered but books for a solid $20. An interesting design for UD to say the least.

Kind of a disappointing card when I read the back and it said it was "used in a rookie photo shoot", yippee! It is from a pretty cool product and it is numbered to /799 I guess. But the unfocused photo just screams laziness. Grrrr!

I don't know a whole lot about Ryan Stoa besides the fact he has only 7 points in 37 games in the NHL and did not play at all for the Avalanche this season. But that doesn't bring me down too much! This is probably my favourite card design out of the lot. It also presents the nicest colour swatch of the bunch and also a fairly big chunk of sweater! Plus it's numbered to /250. Then again, it was used in another photo shoot. When did hockey players become models?

Finally we arrive to my Canucks! Numbered to just /100 copies Nazzy presents a nice blue swatch from a sweater he likely wore in his final season with the Nucks! Naslund was never my favourite player back in the"Express" days, but Big Bert was my type of guy. It's still nice to get a card with #19 on it, he will remain as one of the best to put on a Canucks sweater.

We end off the lot with what is yet another Boston Bruin. Zach Hamill GU RC numbered to /99. It's from a respectable product which means it has a nice thick card stock AND it's shiny and red. Those are all pluses in my books. Other than the fact that Hamill looks completely stoned in the picture and he's a Bruin, I'm a fan of the card.

So for 5 bucks plus about 2 dollars shipping I got what I think was a pretty cool pick-up. These cards should create some nice pieces to fit into trades and if not keep my GU collection slowly stacking higher and higher.

In other news, Luongo pretty much traded himself out of Vancouver today. Always nice to see how the bandwagon reacts to his press conference. It's going to be a LONG off season...

As for now I'll be rooting for the Devils (as my next favourite team) and if not then the Rangers (since I have them in Casey's play-off contest)! Now that I jinxed both those teams...

THE GOALIE PROJECT - Kirk McLean

I'm gonna let most of the pics do the talking here since we have a lot of cardboard to go through. Kirk McLean reigned in net for the majority of 90's in Canucks gear, that being said he was part of the junk wax era. That means I have accumulated a lot of Captain Kirk cards by coincidence.

But hey, I'm never gonna turn down a card even if it is from the 90's and is only worth a dime. Let's take a look at some sheets.

These are the oldest of my McLean's but unfortunately no rookie in the bunch. You probably can't see it in the scan but I probably have somewhere from 4 to 6 dupes in every slot in that 9 pocket page.

The card on the top left is shared with Chevledae. Some more Pro Set and a couple atrocious Score cards.

Another card shared with Cheveldae mixed along with some more Parkhurst. The one thing I really like about looking at 90's cards is the old Canucks flying skate logos.

Probably one of my favourite McLean cards is that one on the bottom left with the close up of his mask. That lid is infamous around Vancouver and overall just sick!

Another thing I come to appreciate when looking through sheets of the same player is the broadness in picture variety.

Now we start getting into some of the newer Canucks jersey's and the lesser popular McLean mask.

This last page rounds out my McLean show and tell. As you can see from the very last card I do have a card of Kirk in another teams jersey which covers one third of the project. Plus the almost 150 total cards of McLean in Canucks gear leaves it at 2/3 complete.

Only one last card to track down (rookie) until I can put a checkmark beside McLeans name.

Game 4 - Vanouver @ Los Angeles

Well, the day has finally arrived. The Canucks have their backs to the wall pushing themselves backwards into a 3-0 series deficit. I couldn't restrain myself from at least mentioning the Canucks awful return to the postseason this week.

People in Vancouver started pushing the panic button after game one, so you can imagine how crazy the city feels after 3 straight loses. People are yelling for Alain Vigneault's head, for Edler's head and hell even Luongo's head (and he played spectacular).

So what could be the problem?

Well for starters it's not been in net. Luongo put up two great starts when the Canucks left him out to dry in the first two games. Game 3 Scneider played his usual awesome self and could not be faulted for the one rebound goal he let in.

Defense was horrific games 1 and 2 but game 3 was a definite improvement (aside from Alex Edler of course).

SCORING is the most obvious of all problems currently. When you take 41 perimeter shots and give Jonothan Quick the satisfaction of a shutout, we have a problem. SHOTS do not equal SCORING CHANCES and I think that's the biggest obstacle the Nucks are facing. In most post game interviews they mention "Oh well we got 40 plus shots so we unfortunately ran into a hot goalkeeper". Excuses, excuses, when only 1 of those 41 shots are from the slot shouldn't sirens be going off?

The poweplay has just plain sucked. With the absence of Daniel and the never ending guilt from trading away our second line PP centre (Cody Hodgson) the Canucks have lost their creativity and more importantly their swagger.

Anyways that is a very short summary of my thoughts on the series. Tonight I think we'll pull through with a 2-1 win in OT. My overall prediction is Kings in 6. I can't believe I just said that...

On another note I had my road test today and failed so ya, you could say I'm in a bad mood. So if the Canucks don't win tonight a bad day will turn into a terrible day.

As for hockey cards, I'm planning to recieve about 6 or so packages in the next 2 weeks so look forward to some new cardboard.

Time to nap away my sorrows.

INSERT IDEAS - Score Playoff Heroes

Inserts are the middle ground of hockey cards. I believe they're something most collectors enjoy to have in their collection, whether it be by complete accident (pulled from a pack) or on purpose. Inserts aren't quite your common base junk (which isn't always junk) and they're not your super exciting AUTO or GU pull. They fit right in between those two and will always have a place in the hobby IMO.

Inserts were the backbone of the hockey card industry in the past and I think they've lost some of their steam in this new era of AUTO's and GU. Once in a while though, a product really comes out with a nice concept and/or design on an insert that gets collectors going (and their wallets). Off the top of my head I think of ITG Between the Pipes "Masked Men" and the Pinnacle "Tough Times" set more recently.

Other times there are those insert sets that make you think "Uhhh...why?". Either the ideas have been recycled, the pictures are boring or the design is just plain ugly.

Well in any case I've decided to start giving inserts the credit they deserve. Every once and a while I'll take a few inserts out of my collection and rate them on three categories:

1. Idea /5
2. Pictures /5
3. Design /5
4. Player Selection /5

That means every insert will have a mark out of 20. So let's start the quest to find the best (and worst) inserts created.

Today we start with a fairly "new" insert set from the past two seasons of the Score release by Panini.

NAME: Playoff Heroes
YEAR: 2010-11

First off the concept or lack there of. This seems like a vey lazy and generic idea to put on an insert. It's kinda your typical low end product insert (which I guess you can't blame them for). You get what you pay I guess. I just don't see the point in making another set featuring playoff heroes when half the players you chose are in no way heroes.

On a side note, Sidney here should have his own insert set called "Playoff Beast" with the points he's putting up. Mind you Giroux should have his own then too ;)

Next let's take a look at the design of the card. Pretty much all the writing is written vertically while the picture is horizontal. Hmmm...that just seems careless on Panini's part. It has all the essentials: name, position and team.

The back seems like more of the same junk. Almost identical design to the front besides replacing the picture for a short biography.

This is the main insert set for Score (I believe it is the biggest). With that comes pour player selection and exceptionally boring "turning while skating" pictures.

NAME: Playoff Heroes

YEAR: 2011-12

Let me say right away that they definitely improved on the design this year but it's still far from perfect or even "great", I'd say average. They stuck with the all vertical look which is nice and I'm a sucker for the 3D pop out design.

The idea is still lame but the photos definitely got a bit better. I believe most if not all of the pics are of the players celebrating a goal.

The backs are similar but not exactly the same as the front. The problem I have with this set is this: when you're picking players for this set does that mean if one guy scores a big goal one series that he is forever entitled to be a "Playoff Hero" and permanently has a spot on this set? I think not but you may have a different view.

Unfortunately both sets did not get a passing grade and thus I think it would be wise for Panini to drop the set. But what do you think, what would you rate these sets on my scale of 20?

IT'S PLAYOFFS TIME BABY!

Can you smell it? Hockey is in the air, I can finally start and feel the excitement in the air today as the Canucks are playing the Kings tonight at Rogers Arena! I'm sure if your favourite team is in the playoffs (or not) you're still stoked to see 16 teams battle it out for a chance at Lord Stanley's Cup.

Most know me on my blog for the hockey cards I collect but I am somewhat of a memorabilia collector also. Anything that has a Canucks logo or is Vancouver Canucks related I will try and get my hands on. Anywhere from lamps, stickers, bobble heads etc. I want it! But there is one type of collection that isn't unique to little old me. In fact it's more of a tradition than anything else.

I'm sure you're all familiar with the white towel waving that STARTED here in Vancouver in 1982 that soon other hockey teams and other sports ~~copied~~ started doing themselves.

It's more than just a "thing" we do every year, it's a ritual, something with meaning and importance! Over my short lifespan I've been able to acquire a neat variety of towels, let's take a look at some of them.

This is the oldest towel in my collection. Obviously it's from the Canucks short play-off run in 2003. As you can see it's a bit dirty on the bottom left hand side which I think adds a little character. It's made of a dishcloth type material that could actually be used in your kitchen if you're that type of person. I am not that type of person, this will stay as safe and preserved as possible from now on.

This next towel is wider and whiter then the towel from 2003. The only problem is I'm not sure what year this is from. All I know is that it has to be earlier than 2007 but later than 2003. Take your guess...

Now we're getting into the era of stronger Canucks teams and the "new" Canucks logo. This towel was actually given to me by my 8th grade teacher a few years back. She knew I was a crazy Canucks fan and she left it in my desk for me one morning. Thanks Mme. Armstrong :)

These pair are from 2009. Probably my favourite design and texture. The thinner the towels are the easier they are to whip around above your head.

This is the second appearance this towel has made on my blog. This towel is signed by none other than Roberto Luongo!

It's a funny looking autograph considering he had to sign on towel material. The blue ink looks great and this is one of my favourite signatures because of the uniqueness. Think of it, many might have a Luongo signature on a hockey card, photo and even jerseys; but a towel signature is definitely different!

This one was not given out at Canucks games like all the others, instead it was issued by RBC (Royal Bank of Canada). But I guess it's still a towel so I'll take it anyway.

These two slightly different towels are from last years magical play-off run. The left is obviously from the 4 games the Canucks played against the Bruins here in Vancity. The right towel was being handed out at the other 3 rounds in Vancouver.

I own three towel from the finals and two from the other rounds.

CRAZY CARDS - The Matt Cooke Mystery

Well it's not that much of a mystery but it does have a story behind it. First I'm gonna fill you in on what I'm talking about. Years ago when I was a wee little boy my eyes were opened to the wonderful world that is eBay by my aunt. She offered to buy me any card I wanted (within reason of course). Which card did I want? Well the name that escaped my mouth was Matt Cooke.

Yes I typed it right. Matt Cooke. Why? Why you ask? Even I don't have the answer to that. My favourite player was Dan Coutier at the time and I was also a big fan of Bertuzzi. Deep inside though I must have wanted a Matt Cooke hockey card.

The card was given to me later by aunt and this is what it looked like:

Okay so it's obviously an autographed hockey card from the Stadium Club set. I don't know much about the set but after searching through my Beckett a year back or so I couldn't find an autographed Matt Cooke card that was listed.

The back doesn't say "you have received a certified autograph of Matt Cooke" so this leads me to believe that I (or should I say my aunt) bought a TTM/IP autograph.

If I were to go back in time, I wouldn't have bought this card. Not because it's Matt Cooke but because the fact it's most likely a TTM. TTM'ing is something that should never be sold, period. I would accept it in a trade IF I know the other person and their usual intentions with TTM's.

I guess now the deed has been done and there is nothing left to do but enjoy it. It is the signature of an NHL right, so why not enjoy it?

If you want a good laugh, read the write up on Cookie on the back of the card. Apparently he has a tendency to "avoid[] foolish penalties". *SIGH* How times have changed.

THE GOALIE PROJECT - John Garrett

Wow was this past week ever busy! Between school, work, family and trying to send some cards around the country it's been a little hectic. Not to mention at school we were in "Code Red Lockdown" for an hour because there was a guy running around with a gun. Anyways, now that you think I live in the ghetto let's move on...

Today I'm doing a straight out Goalie Project. For those of you that are new to the project, have forgotten or just like reading my rules over and over again, here they are:

Rules
- Must acquire a minimum of three cards from every goalie to suite up for the Canucks (with a few exceptions)
- The three cards are: rookie card; a card in a Canucks jersey; a card in another teams jersey.

So there you have it, let's take a look at the goalie of the hour - John Garrett. His mask for the Canucks is one of the more recognizable of it's day (especially paired with the flying V jerseys). One of his cards popped up in my top 10 favourite cards too!

He also does a great job helping John Shorthouse (and other past commentators) as a colour guy at almost all Canucks games from the past 10 seasons.

This here is what I like to call a 66% completion. For those mathematicians out there that is two thirds complete ;). The first card of Garrett is the oldest and is from his NHL days in Hartford. That is another cool looking card, the old school pads and mask do a number on me. Unfortunately even though that is one of his first couple years in Hartford, his rookie season was 5 or so years prior to that card from his WHA days. That should be fun to track down!

The other two fall under the "wearing Canucks jersey category", and it does it with a bit of flair. The classic flying V's with a classic mask. Don't get much better than that!

CANUCKS SPECIALS - The REAL 2011-12 Gift

Okay so sometimes I eat my words. Today I have to do just that. Awhile back I got in the mail what I thought was the 2011-12 Season Ticket Holder gift from the Vancouver Canucks organization. You can read what I thought about that "gift" here. To make a long story short, I was not impressed. It felt like the gift lacked a certain special/unique appeal that they usually have.

Turns out that WASN'T the actual gift! Kinda bittersweet, I have to admit that the Canucks organization weren't putting out a simple magazine as the gift (and eat my words) BUT! I instead get a super sweet thank you gift. I'm glad my dad still thinks of me and my collection addiction and hands these on to me, they really are a treat!

So let's look at it!

The package came in this blue matte finished box with a foiled Vancouver Canucks logo and the ever famous Vancouverite slogan "We Are All Canucks". Classy. Checkmark.

Inside was this folder that contained a couple brochures. One was full of information of how to renew your season tickets (which I handed to my father with a smile). The other brochure contained full page photos and captions from the year thus far. There are some really cool shots in this thing and it kinda gives me goosebumps thinking about the play-offs.

Let's take a look at my top three favourite shots from the booklet.

Okay...so this was definitely made BEFORE the trade deadline. There is rookie Cody Hodgson doing a post-game interview. This only makes me sad, but it still is one of my favourites. On a side note, I'm working on making a trade for the Artifacts Cody Hodgson redemption numbered to /99! Hope I get it, I just hope I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch. Moving on...

This picture I thought would have a really cool affect on you TTM'ers out there. That is Dan Hamhuis signing hockey cards (with some wrapped in a rubber band...yikes!) Look at all that fan mail eh? But what I found really interesting was how the hockey cards travelled with him around North America. It's funny how hockey cards do more travelling then humans. Also I don't see any letter anywhere, is he even reading them? I hope so, I know if I ever tried to TTM I would put time and effort and hope it would even be scanned through. Anyhoo, I thought it was interesting and thought you might find it to.

This is the very last picture in the entire booklet and it sends chills down my spine. I can feel and hear the atmosphere of the crowd just looking at it. Looking at this only makes me more excited about the play-offs.

Overall, I'm really happy to put this in my Vancouver Canucks memorabilia collection. I'm really starting to collect a mini museum of cool Nucks stuff. It's fun and I wouldn't wanna quit it ever.

Welcome Kyle!

Recently I've come across a new blog and the author is a great guy. Kyle is a student from Ontario and he just decided to start his own blog. From what I know he is a Pittsburgh Penguins, Evgeni Malkin and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fan (among other teams and players).

WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Card 3 - Part 4) My New PC

This final card from my third 25 dollar pre-paid credit card comes with a new announcement. Yup, the title says it all, a new part of my collection is being officially created. I'm sure the anticipation is killing you...

I've decided to start a player collection of former Canucks goaltender and childhood favourite - Dan Cloutier. There are a few reasons why I decided to make Dan Cloutier my new player collection along with Cody Hodgson.

First, like I mentioned before he was the first guy to be a stand out favourite player as a kid. So that in itself is a reason to be dedicated to collecting his cards.

Second, I don't know of many other Cloutier collectors out there so competition for his cards can't be that stiff.

That leads me to my third reason, because of the lack of need, the price on his cards are lower than a lot of other players. That's great considering my hockey card budget.

Also he is retired which means he doesn't have many (if any) cards coming up on recent sets. That gives me time and focus to collect what he already has out there and not looking too far ahead in the future.

Last but not least I already have a good "core" when it comes to collecting Cloutiers. The 30+ cards (1 GU and 2 AUTO's) are a healthy start to the cause.

Oh ya, there is a card to show in this post. Take a look ladies and gents a nice addition to my Goalie Project as well as my brand new Dan Cloutier PC:

This card is made by ITG and is part of the BAP set (when they had the rights to the set). Nothing to special about the card design or texture but there are other reasons why I bought this card.

The signature kinda has a TTM "sign wherever you like" kinda feel to it. There aren't many of those out there these days. There's usually always either a spot to sign or a sticker AUTO. And what an autograph this is! I forgot to mention before but I love Dan Cloutiers signature. I think it's unique and always looks well done. I think that's also very important when picking a player to collect full time.

You'll also notice that Cloutier is in his Lightning gear so this card was produced before he made his way into the Canucks organization.

Very happy about this card and very excited about where this Dan Cloutier collection will go!

I'm still in the process of deciding what look I like for my Hodgson PC website and once I get that fixed and under control, I'll be making an identical site for my Cloutier PC.

One decision I have to make is; do I pull out my Cloutier cards out of my Goalie Project binder and into a binder all by itself? I think so, but what have you done in these situations?

Do you think this new PC is a good decision? What tips do you have when it comes to collecting TWO different players?

What A Custom! Thanks Brett!

Anyone who reads my blog I'm sure has been reading MY HOCKEY CARD OBSESSION for some time before. Brett (the author) continues to put up some outstanding articles and thought provoking issues surrounding hockey cards and hockey in general.

Recently, Brett has been making some AMAZING progress with his custom card designs. I mean it when I say it is some beautiful work. He just made a Gordie Howe AUTO card that blew my mind, I don't know how a card company hasn't snatched this guy up yet.

About a couple of months ago I asked if he accepted requests, the AUTO I handed him was this:

It's of Daniel Sedin and it's on the back of a business card. I'm always a fan of IP AUTO's but there's something about a card design that makes an AUTO that much more special.

Brett accepted this challenge and was super accommodating with what I was looking for in the card. I gave my two cents but I really wanted him to have his own creative expression because I knew what he was capable of and let me say, he didn't disappoint!

A scan wasn't doing the card justice so this photo is the closest thing to seeing it in person. What a good job eh?! It's hard to see but the "V" background has a jersey feel to it and this card just screams Vancouver Canucks. I was very happy Brett was able to include the "To Michael; from:" in the AUTO as I'm a big fan of personalized autographs.

But the goodness doesn't stop here...

My first reaction to the back of the card was "Holy crap, Brett did this??" Yup he did, and what a great job! Classy, well coloured, nice texture, and as always a well written paragraph. This honestly looks like a professionally made card and I could't be more happy with it!

Nothing else to say but THANK YOU BRETT!

GAME DAY - March 3rd, 2012 - Canucks vs. Buffalo

This post is a little bit late as it is four days after the game but I still have a few stories and a little bit of a background about this game. But first, let's take a look at the ticket stub and the program (two things I've been collecting for years).

Same seats, but a very different game. Obviously the biggest story going around town was Cody Hodgson vs Zack Kassian. If you caught the highlights or watched the game in it's entirety you will know that Kassian was the big winner on this night. He got a big assist and an even bigger goal and put the Canucks in the game for a short period of time.

The Canucks didn't really ever have the odds in their favour the entire game. In fact just 55 seconds in Luongo let a weak goal in (five hole) followed by 2 more goals in under 5 minutes. So right of the bat ~~the Canucks~~ Luongo dug a hole that ended up growing and became nearly impossible to overcome.

Like I said though Kassian did provide a glimmer of hope. In fact it was 4-2 and big Zack scored to bring the Canucks within a goal with only 3 minutes left. But the Canucks had bad timing when pulling the goalie and the Sabres locked up a win with an empty netter.

Overall it was another fun game with my dad. Although the Canucks didn't get the outcome the city wanted it was still a fantastic game to watch. It was definitely a roller coaster ride of emotions and the fans lived and died by the score.

Stay tuned for another post later on tonight. I got a really cool card in the mail today that I have to share before I leave on vacation tomorrow!

BOX BREAK: I GOT FREE CROWN ROYALE CARDS! THANKS PANINI!

I know you might be kinda shocked at the title you just read up top. But it is EXACTLY as it seems. Let me explain. A few weeks back (maybe even a month) when Panini had released this years Crown Royale product, they did a four box break on their site. I saw some really cool cards come out of the box and was overall pretty impressed as I've always seen Crown Royale as a unique and highly distinguishable product.

Long story short, they made it into a casual contest and said to write a comment on what you thought of the product. If they selected your comment as "one of the best" they would send you some of the hits from the box. The post was already a couple days old and only had 20 or so comments so I put in my two cents concluding with this pun: "this was a ROYALLY good product".

So I guess Panini liked what I said and shortly after awarded me as a contest winner. I e-mailed them my shipping address and yesterday a nice big package came in the mail for me. I knew right away it was from Panini and opened it up expecting some of the cards from the break I saw online to be inside. Instead I found this...

WOOT WOOT! A free box of hockey cards! Plus it's a mid-high range product that I would have probably never forked out a 100 bucks for. SWEEEEEET! Just knowing this box was 100% free and that there was no pressure to "get what I paid for" was awesome. Hell, even if I pulled a bunch of crap it wouldn't have bothered me (that much).

Anyways let's get to the break!

I pulled 11 regular base cards. This Alex Ovechkin is my favourite of the bunch. You've all seen and dealt with these cards before. Love the texture, cut, and design of these cards all around.

I pulled one Legends base card. Stevey-Y isn't a bad card to pull. Only difference between the regular base and this is the black and white photo.

Contained in every 4 pack box is a red parallel base card. Of course I pulled a Chicago Blackhawks parallel. These parallels are not numbered.

Next I received one RC of Harri Sateri. Don't know who the heck he is but he has one sick mask!

I pulled two inserts, this first one is of who other then my mortal enemy Patrick Kane. It's okay though I'm not that mad, did I mention this box was free? :)

Okay this makes up for the Kane card big time. Gabriel Landeskog is a big rookie with his eyes on the Calder trophy (as the card points out). Nice rookie to pick up out of this year's crop, although a CoHo would've been nice.

Now onto the hits. Just to put you through the same thought process I had I'll put the hits in the order I pulled them. Starting with pack #1...

I was stoked to pull this bad boy! I love the die-cut technology they used on a thicker GU card. You feel like this is a quality card. Nice sharp edges and corners and the swatch is a nice dark blue! Definitely happy to pull the most unique GU concept I've seen this year!

Even better! My first ever GU AUTO combination on a hockey card! Plus it's of a rookie and it's numbered to /100 copies! The few downsides to this card are the sticker AUTO and the fact it's a very poor quality signature. But still this card is pretty sweet! I'll take it any day of the week!

Pack three led to the most basic of all the hits. But there is a nice upside to this card. First is the player. JVR has been decent for the Flyers in his short career and I'm a fan. Plus the swatch of jersey is bright orange instead of a boring white. Definitely the most vibrant of my entire GU collection.

Finally pack four unleashed Big Joe! Obviously this is the biggest name of the break and it comes with a fairly fancy looking AUTO. Nice penmanship Joe. This card is also numbered to /99 copies.

Overall, this was a short but super exciting box break. I can't thank Panini enough for giving a guy like me the opportunity to break a box I probably would've never been able to! Cool cards, fun break and awesome product!

Finally, I've seen some box break's of Crown Royale here and there but what is your overall reaction to this product? Have you any received cards from free from a big company like Upper Deck, ITG, Panini etc.?

I also just came home from the Canucks vs. Buffalo game (this was in the draft file since this morning) so look forward to a "Game Day" post in the next couple days.

TOP 60 CARDS - The Final 10

After a VERY long run, the top 60 cards series ends here. But we're finishing strong. I have stories and background behind all these cards coming up. Some I've had ever since I remember collecting and some have been added within the year. Let's get to it!

#10 - 1971-72 OPC Rosaire Paiement (#233)

This is a prime example of how a card can mean nothing to somebody and at the same time it can mean the world to someone else. To most non-Canucks fans and general collectors this card could even be seen as a expendable card in their collection, not for me! This card was like getting a piece of history. I received this card when my collection was relatively small and definitely didn't have anything past the 1989-90 season. To receive a card from the 70's was a HUGE deal! Especially when the Canucks were in their "throwback" uniforms.

This card was one man's trash and now it is my treasure.

#9 - 1983-84 OPC John Garrett (#349)

I think it's fairly obvious why this card fits into my top 10. My first impression of this card is "What an ugly yet beautiful jersey and mask". Again, to most this combo is one of the most horrendous combo's they've seen. But not to me. To me this is the heart of my team; and that mask...well...it's a classic!

However this card also carries a story behind it. As you may or may not know, MY HOCKEY CARD OBSESSION was the reason I got back into "hardcore" collecting again (for lack of a better word). His blog is was the inspiration for mine, and it has really become something I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to. It helps me organize myself, share my thoughts and most importantly learn new things about the sport and hobby I love everyday! Anyways, when I was starting up he sent me a massive collection of Canucks goalie cards to help me with my Goalie Project and that was my first taste of the generosity of the blogging world.

Also to all the others that have helped me out, I would also like to quickly thank you all (you know who you are)!

#8 - 1991-92 UD Niklas Lidstrom "Young Guns"

This is a card I found in my uncles old collection that I swore I would never let go of, and I haven't. But in the past I kept it because I thought it would be worth a lot of money (the innocence of youth). Now I still cherish it but, it's because of it's historic value and because it looks kick ass! Everything about this card is cool and that is the only reason I have to put it this high in my top 10. But it's my top 10 and I can do what I want :).

#7 - 1981-82 OPC Edmonton Oiler TL (#126)

The oldest Gretzky I have is actually not a Gretzky card at all. But when you score 164 points I'm pretty sure you can say this is your card. I've never HATED the Oilers even when they were good and competitive rivals of the Canucks (although I have disliked them at times). So this card gets a well deserved "numero sept" in my top 10.

#6/#5 - 2006-07 BAP Luc Bourdon (#203) [+ AUTO /10]

This card has been mentioned numerous time here at C4K. If you want the full summary you can click HERE. But the real beauty out of the two, is one I just recently acquired and was luckily able to sneak into my top 10.

This card will NEVER lose it's value to me. I can't even put to words how much this card means to me. To have this truly rare piece of history of this young mans life is incredible and I still mourn his death to this day.

#4 - 2007-08 UD Masterpiece Richard Brodeur (Event-Used - Brown)

No doubt one of my all-time favourite sets and one of my all time favourite Canucks. Everything about this card is right. The colour scheme, the foil accents, the artists rendition picture, the fade into the background and the texture is perfect! This is certainly a card that I truly appreciate and feel that it was well thought out.

#3 - 2008-09 OPC Luongo/Ohlund/Edler "Triple Materials"

This card was given to me awhile back and was a huge surprise and obviously remains one of my favourites! If you haven't already passed by SHOEBOX LEGENDS (which I'm sure you have) do so now! I always love passing by and reading some really nice write-ups on some jaw-dropping cards.

Anyways back to the card, as you can see all three swatches seem to come from different parts of the jersey. Luongo's come from a dark blue/black part of maybe a 2006-07 Canucks jersey? Ohlund's is thinner and probably comes from a "breathable" part of a jersey. Whereas Edler's is thicker and more...pillow-like...most likely it came from somewhere near the logo where the material is a little comfier. Am I the only person that wonders what part of the jersey the swatches come from?

#2 - 2006-07 BTP Emile "Cat" Francis "Autographs"

First are a big deal to me in collecting. Like anything in life, it's exciting to accomplish something for the first time. This was/is my first graded hockey card. I was extremely excited to get this card for the price I did and was even happier when I saw this AUTO in person. This thing is a beauty! I love when players take their time when signing and really do it carefully. This HOF (builder) did just that. Plus he played for the Canucks! Go HERE for more info on Emile, it gives me chills thinking he played in the 40's and 50's and I have his autograph!

#1 - 2010-11 BTP Kirk McLean "Autographs"

Finally the number one card in my collection comes from a goalie that lead the Canucks to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1994! Kirk McLean otherwise know as Captain Kirk was quite a thrilling pull last year in my box break of Between the Pipes! Technically I was suppose to get 2 AUTO's and 2 GU, but McLean was thrown in as an extra goodie and boy oh boy am I ever happy that happened.

Memorable break, memorable AUTO, memorable player. This is my favourite card I own!
