TOP 60 CARDS (Part 2) - #55-51

This is proving to be one of my favourite segments now, today we are gonna look at five new cards. Some are cool designs, some are weird coincidences and some are just damn cool. Let's go...

#55 - 2002-03 Pacific McDonalds "Glove Side Net-Fusions" Evgeni Nabokov (#6)

Yes this is a card from McDonalds, there are mixed reactions that come from these cards but there have been some really cool designs. This one features a die-cut glove with actual string attached. Looks pretty cool and this is possibly a set I would try and complete in the future. Another Net-Fusions insert will be coming up also.

#54 - 1994-95 Pinnacle Sylvain Turgeon (#288)

This card was part of my very first post. I've also seen this card featured on various other blogs. In case you're wondering and don't want to read the entire post that was linked, Patrick Kane is the little boy on the far right hand corner smiling. That's the only reason why this card is BV'd at $15.

#53 - 2007-08 UD McDonalds "In the Crease" Ryan Miller (#ICRM)

Another McDonalds insert this time from the Upeer Deck era. I really like cards that you can see through WHEN DONE WELL, and this card was designed well. Plus this card was released when Miller was considered the strongest goalie in the NHL.

#52 - 1990-91 Score Jan Erixon (#343)

"SNIPER!" "PLAYMAKER!" "ENFORCER!"...shadow? Mr. Erixon - you're one lucky man! Any young aspiring hockey player doesn't want to score goals, or set up beautiful plays, or even fight! They want to be called a "Shadow" just like you. Congrats, I wish my name was on that card!

#51 - 2006-07 UD Be A Player Patrick O'Sullivan RC AUTO /10 (#205)

This is officially the first AUTO in my top 60. This card came into my collection fairly recently in a box break of 2006-07 BAP. This card is in my top 60 because this is tied for my lowest numbered card in my collection. Someday I hope to get into the single digits but for now anything numbered at /10 will be accepted with open arms.

51. 2006-07 BAP RC AUTO Patrick O'Sullivan /10
52. 1990-91 Score Jan Erixon
53. 2007-08 UD McDonalds "In the Crease" Ryan Miller
54. 1994-95 Pinnacle Sylvain Turgeon (ft. Patrick Kane)
55. 2002-03 Pacific McDonalds "Net-Fusions" Evgeni Nabokov
56. 1994-95 Pinnacle Doug Lidster
57. 1990-91 Score / 1995-96 Topps - Oilers / Devils Stanley Cup
58. 1992-93 UD Jim Hrivnak
59. 1990-91 Topps Grant Fuhr
60. 1990-91 Bowman Daren Puppa

THE GOALIE PROJECT - Mike Fountain

It's nice to be back after a short trip up to the beautiful village of Whistler. Got some nice pics of the surroundings and chilled by the pool. Tonight's kinda an exciting night as my team has it's first exhibition game of the season (in case you're wondering that's soccer not hockey). My main position is midfield but since our goalie is unavailable my coach tapped me on the shoulder and is putting me in net tonight, so wish me luck!

As for hockey card I got no new stuff coming in quite yet but I did want to throw out a quick Goalie Project from a keeper I've been waiting to finish for a while. Here's the page.

As you can see from the very first Fountain card on top that is an "Official Pinnacle Rookie Card" of Mike Fountain. There are also two other Canucks Fountain cards as well as a Fountain card sporting Sens gear. That Sens card is yet another important card Brett from My Hockey Card Obsession sent me back when I started the project. I don't give him enough credit for the pack of 100 goalie cards he sent me but they have been shown numerous times throughout other GP's. Thanks again Brett, your help never goes without notice!

TOP 60 CARDS (Part 1) - #60-56

Yes, a new segment! While I was shuffling through Shoebox Legends older posts I found these. I thought to myself what a great idea, so I'm gonna be a little copy cat and do my own Top 60 cards. This will be a 12 part series, and we'll examine 5 cards per time.

Will all the cards be autos? Probably not. Will they be mostly GU/jersey cards? Most likely not. All RC? Don't think so. But they all have to have at least a $5 BV though, right Michael? Nope. Get the gist? These cards can be chosen in my top 60 for any varying reason, from a funny pic to pure greatness.

First I must apologize in advance for my cut off scans. I purchased a MacBook Air with a portion of my summer job money and I'm still getting use to the scanning. But this things a beaut so I can't complain. Let's start!

#60 - 1990-91 Bowman Daren Puppa (#242)

Mr. Puppa has always stuck in my mind from the old computer NHL hockey games. I mean with a name like Puppa (poo-pa) you can't help but liking the guy. So being the first card of his I remember getting, brings back good memories. Also, this rainbow like border of this Bowman set is in my top 20 sets (hey theirs another good idea).

#59 - 1990-91 Topps Grant Fuhr (#321)

Well here's another set that could jump in my top 20 (although since I'm Canadian, I'm partial to OPC). I really love the coordination of pads/helmet etc. from the older goalies. Nowadays masks don't always match everything else. But here Grant shows some nice style. Although the Oilers have been the competitive division rivals of the Nucks (at times) these old school jerseys are probably in my top 25 of all-time (wow, I'm mister great idea today).

#58 - 1992-93 UD Jim Hrivnak (#151)

Another great jersey! The caps went back to a more modern look a couple seasons ago (thank God). But before the modern rejuvenation, we had the originals. Here Hrivnak is sporting that jersey in a great warm-up shot. This shot is one that is used not all the time, but when executed well - it's great. Again the mask design goes along well with the rest of the equipment so that's always a plus.

#57 - (A) 1990-91 Score Edmonton Oilers (#331) / (B) 1995-96 Topps New Jersey Devils (#218)

Ahhhhh...hoisting Lord Stanley, something all aspiring hockey players dream off. I think these two cards speak for themselves, especially how happy Marty looks in the front of the Topps card. Simply overjoyed!

#56 - 1994-95 Pinnacle Doug Lidster (#409)

JERRY SEINFELD! AHHHHH!

56. 1994-95 Pinnacle Doug Lidster
57. 1990-91 Score / 1995-96 Topps - Oilers / Devils Stanley Cup
58. 1992-93 UD Jim Hrivnak
59. 1990-91 Topps Grant Fuhr
60. 1990-91 Bowman Daren Puppa

That's it for this segment, more to come soon!

(A Very Big) Goalie Project - Richard Brodeur

Wow it seems like it's been forever since I posted an actual hockey card related topic. Today we will start things up again with what I believe to be one of my favourite cards in my collection.

I've posted Richard Brodeur cards before including one from my "Old Timer Treasure" set. Take a look if you haven't already seen...

Now let's take a look at what the magic Richard Brodeur sheet has to offer...

As you can see ITG makes poor good use of the same photo year after year. Another interesting card to look at is the base card from UD masterpieces and what I believe to be one of my favourite sets of all time. If you continue reading you'll see why I say that. The "Greats of the Game" base card that is the left card in the second row is one of the two I own. Finally the first card is the oldest Brodeur card I have, yet not even close to his rookie season where he played for the Norgeeks. Now onto the good stuff.

My Richard Brodeur collection also involves an "Event-Worn" jersey card. Normally I wouldn't be so excited about this but the set and designs makes up for it - big time. This card was also my favourite jersey card until my buddy over at Shoebox Legends sent me this beauty. Take a look...

I love everything about this card, and when having to chose between an all white piece or coloured I picked this one not knowing this was only "Event-Used".

Love this card and remains as one of my favourites in the collection. Now here's a gander at what my goalie project looks like.

CONTEST WINNER!

Well the contest has finally come to an end and it finished with 4 great entries. Let's have a look at them in the order that I received them.

Brad (Cards from the Crease)

This mask design was the most creative in my mind. Brad explained that "My Pet Monster" was his favourite show as a kid.

Paul (Card Boarded)

Paul's design was the second I received. The logos on each side and down the front is from his favourite band. The words and lines all around are lyrics to some of his favourite songs. Very cool inspiration for your mask Paul!

Kazi (Hockey Kazi)

Kazi was the only one to make use of the old-school design. He went with a simple yet effective TO logo.

Justin

A last minute entry was great to see from one of my newest followers. Love that he repped his his team and he made a great use of his photoshop abilities.

All that entered put up a plug so all get 5 bonus points.

The winner is...

JUSTIN COX!

Thanks Justin for the great designs in the end you're score just won by a single point (thats how close it was). Awesome job bud, I'll send you an e-mail asking for your address and you'll received either an auto or GU card with a special team pack of your contest winning Colorado Avalanche.

That's it folks, until next time. Btw, did I make the right choice in your mind? Let me know, drop me a comment.

SPECIAL MAIL DAY !! THANKS TO SHOEBOX LEGENDS !!

TWO DAYS LEFT TO ENTER MASK DESIGN CONTEST!! ---------------->

Kazi, Sal, Marko and Dave you have a couple days left to put the finishing touches on your mask designs and send them to me at johnny(underscore)canuck57(at)yahoo(dot)com.

Now for the good stuff. I got an awesome card sent into the mail to me today. It's from my good buddy and long time reader over at Shoebox Legends! Although he's a Bruins fan, he's always been a great sport and I thoroughly enjoy reading his blog. He messaged me a while back saying he had a card he had for me, not even knowing what it was he sent it to me and I got this beauty today:

Can't even put into words how much I love this card. Three swatches of great players! My very first Memorabilia card of Mr. Bobby Lu and two great d-men at that. This is no doubt my most prized GU card in my collection and it inches me closer to getting my GU count into the double digits! THANKS!

CONTEST UPDATE

CONTEST OPEN UNTIL AUGUST 13TH ------------------>

Things have been a bit busy lately with my summer job, it's nice getting into the real work world and away from school. I've been working as a laborer for my uncle in a very specific type trade (too long to explain). It's great working in the sun and getting a good workout doing it.

But that's not what you're here to read about. Just a little reminder that if you still wish to join my mask design contest, you have less than 10 days left. Take a quick look at the contest by clicking the link on the top right corner. Also, Paul and Brad have already submitted their masks. Let me just say, both were very well done, very creative, and both have great stories behind them. Also, if you still want those extra 5 bonus points, you have to put a plug of my contest on your blog (Paul and Brad I have already counted yours).

That's it for now, more hockey card stuff to come soon!
