WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Card 3 - Part 4) My New PC

This final card from my third 25 dollar pre-paid credit card comes with a new announcement. Yup, the title says it all, a new part of my collection is being officially created. I'm sure the anticipation is killing you...

I've decided to start a player collection of former Canucks goaltender and childhood favourite - Dan Cloutier. There are a few reasons why I decided to make Dan Cloutier my new player collection along with Cody Hodgson.

First, like I mentioned before he was the first guy to be a stand out favourite player as a kid. So that in itself is a reason to be dedicated to collecting his cards.

Second, I don't know of many other Cloutier collectors out there so competition for his cards can't be that stiff.

That leads me to my third reason, because of the lack of need, the price on his cards are lower than a lot of other players. That's great considering my hockey card budget.

Also he is retired which means he doesn't have many (if any) cards coming up on recent sets. That gives me time and focus to collect what he already has out there and not looking too far ahead in the future.

Last but not least I already have a good "core" when it comes to collecting Cloutiers. The 30+ cards (1 GU and 2 AUTO's) are a healthy start to the cause.

Oh ya, there is a card to show in this post. Take a look ladies and gents a nice addition to my Goalie Project as well as my brand new Dan Cloutier PC:

This card is made by ITG and is part of the BAP set (when they had the rights to the set). Nothing to special about the card design or texture but there are other reasons why I bought this card.

The signature kinda has a TTM "sign wherever you like" kinda feel to it. There aren't many of those out there these days. There's usually always either a spot to sign or a sticker AUTO. And what an autograph this is! I forgot to mention before but I love Dan Cloutiers signature. I think it's unique and always looks well done. I think that's also very important when picking a player to collect full time.

You'll also notice that Cloutier is in his Lightning gear so this card was produced before he made his way into the Canucks organization.

Very happy about this card and very excited about where this Dan Cloutier collection will go!

I'm still in the process of deciding what look I like for my Hodgson PC website and once I get that fixed and under control, I'll be making an identical site for my Cloutier PC.

One decision I have to make is; do I pull out my Cloutier cards out of my Goalie Project binder and into a binder all by itself? I think so, but what have you done in these situations?

Do you think this new PC is a good decision? What tips do you have when it comes to collecting TWO different players?

WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Card 3 - Part 3) A Post From a Foreign Land

Well I'm on the road with the family right now because my sister has a cheer competition in the states. So we dropped down south to the U.S of A and as of about 40 minutes ago things were going great. We were downtown Seattle staying in our regular hotel when we stay in one of my fav US cities - the Sheraton. But now we find ourselves in Tacoma in an uncomfortable, dirty motel...ya know the classic riches to rags story. But as long as my sis is with her team it makes her happy, which makes me happy so I'll suck it up. I'm no baby when it comes to this stuff but there is a line.

Anyways this is (I believe) my first post from a foreign land. I've been doing my best to stay up to date with my daily reading of all my fav blogs, but if some of my comments have been repeating or misspelled blame it on my iPhone's keypad.

The one upside to this motel is that there is free wi-fi (no heating but don't worry free wi-fi). Since I have one extra card scanned from home I thought it might be appropriate to relax, kick back and blog. After all, I kinda miss you guys (awwwww).

So with no further introduction here is the most expensive purchases out of the bunch I made with my 25 dollar pre-paid card:

This is a really nice piece to add to my CoHo collection! After scouring over what Hodgson card to purchase on eBay I landed this OPC Retro RC. Most of his RC's were around the 10 dollar mark but this one was my favourite, even the Young Guns were not appealing to me. This card also taught me his birthday is tomorrow, which makes him exactly 5 years and 6 days older than me. Now that I think about it, that's not much older.

In other Cody Hodgson news, what a season he is having! With the injury to RNH, Cody is a legitimate contender for the Calder! He has 32 points (4th among rookies and 6 points off of 1st) playing on the third line. Imagine what he could do in RNH spot in Edmonton! I hope he keeps his stats up and his smart play consistent, after all I believe he is the Linden of my generation (fingers crossed)!

Before I forget I paid $4.99 as the BIN price. Plus about 3 bucks in shipping. Not too bad considering these are going for $25 at my LCS.

With this Cody Hodgson card my remaining balance is:

2011-12 Black Diamond Richard Brodeur "Dual Jersey" - $0.99 (+ 2.50 shipping)
2011-12 Certified Yann Sauve "Freshman Signatures" - $1.24 (+ 2.48 shipping)
2010-11 Ultimate Hockey Sedins "Ultimate Duos" /50 - $0.99 (+3.49 shipping)
2011-12 OPC Retro Cody Hodgson RC - $4.99 (+3.05 shipping)

WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Card 3 - Part 2) Quadruple Sedins?

I'm going to let the card do most of the talking on this one. You know how it works, 25 dollar limit on eBay and this is card number 3. Like I said this is a "Quadruple" card and I don't mean four cards, I mean four jersey swatches.

I snagged this card at a surprising $0.99 plus shipping and when you see the quality of the card, the product and the low numbering I think this was sorta highway robbery.

Every time I look at this card I think "Wow, two art ross winners on one card and it only sells for a buck?" Anyways I'm really happy to steal this card away and the buyer was probably one of the most professional I've ever encountered. Along with a well written note he stuck in this as extra:

Yes it's a 10 cent card but, it's the thought that counts! What do you guys think of the card? Any great deals you've been able to scoop up lately?

Additionally, I'll be away for the next week or so, so don't expect much in terms of blogging in the next 5-7 days. See you soon!

WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Card 3 - Part 1) A Couple of Steals

I recently bought my third 25 dollar pre-paid card so that I can buy some cards online. I received two cards in the mail a couple of days ago and I had a really good time tracking them down. But even better were the prices I was able to snag these puppies for! Let's get to it!

This card came from this years release of Black Diamond. Black Diamond could just be the most "consistent" of all Upper Deck products. They don't sway from the general design and it works. If people are still buying, why switch it up? This card has a retro 90's type feel to the back, maybe it's because of the old school Canucks logo.

There were a lot of these double jersey Brodeur cards on the market but I really tried to get value out of the two colours. These red and blue/green swatches did the job and as a plus UD confirmed that these are in fact "Game Used" jersey swatches which one ups my current "Event Used" card of Brodeur.

My second card is a Rookie AUTO of an up-and-coming defence man in the Canucks organization - Yann Sauve. He was selected in the 2nd round (41st overall) of the 2008 draft (the same draft year as Cody Hodgson). I think he needs one more year playing in the AHL until he can make a solid stride into the big league. Glad to snag this AUTO for cheap as I know of two local Sauve collectors that check the Bay quite often. Plus this is my first taste of Certified from this season - and I like!

Like I said I feel like I got some pretty good prices on these two cards. What do you think?

2011-12 Black Diamond Richard Brodeur "Dual Jersey" - $0.99 (+ 2.50 shipping)
2011-12 Certified Yann Sauve "Freshman Signatures" - $1.24 (+ 2.48 shipping)

Any luck with you guys lately on eBay and good deals you'd like to share?

WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Part 9) A Couple From the 70's

It's been awhile since I've posted something on my site (thanks to black friday and my vacation down to Oregon). I was able to visit friends, shop until 4am, go into food coma and of course watch a good Ducks v Beavers game (naturally I rooted for the Beavers because it reminded me of my good ol' country - Canada).

I was thinking of my blog and doing my best to keep in touch with yours as well. Today I'm going to show and tell a couple cards I picked up from eBay a couple months back. This is my second to last segment of "What Does 25 Bucks Getcha?". We'll start with one for my Goalie Project.

Looks like you didn't have to be super fit when playing net back in they day (given from Dunc's chins).

Well that cartoon tells us just how Dunc got his double chin, he worked for a brewery - go figure.

In all seriousness this card isn't in great shape, but for only a buck it was a nice add to my Goalie Project.

For some reason this card spoke to me. Again, not in great shape, horribly cut, yet, I love it! Old school Canadiens de Montreal, Bob Gainey's flowing mini fro, all the makings of a good hockey card.

Any card that has Nova Scotia on the back is a winner. Love the old school design, why can't OPC do something like this for all there base cards?

WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Part 8) The Cream of the Crop!

As the title suggests, this card is the standout of my eBay purchases. But what's odd about this card is how and why I bought it. It's something very unique in my collection and it rests as something very special in my collection. First let me set up the scenario.

At this point in my purchases I've tried scraping deals and getting mediocre cards for a fairly cheap price. I wanted to mix it up so I made a generic search of "hockey cards" and sorted them by "ending soonest". After scanning through some nice looking cards I found one that stood out to me. Not because of a multi-coloured patch or a super low numbered card, but instead it was because of the signature.

This card is also BGS graded (no clue what BGS stands for) but it's in the plastic casing with a nice number 9 on top with the word "mint" below it. What really attracted me was the gold square beside the number 9 - a 10. The square rated showed a 10/10 Beckett Autograph. From the scan above you can tell why. That is by far the classiest and most cared for signature in my collection. No sloppy or lazy letters and he even included his nickname "cat".

If you can't tell who this card is signed by from the signature (which isn't that hard) it's signed by Emile "Cat" Francis. It's safe to say I didn't know much about this goalie from the late 40's to early 60's so with about 20 minutes before the auction ended - I did some research.

Francis' stats go back from his times with the North Battleford Beavers (N-SJHL) in 1941-42 all the way to 1959-60 with the Seattle Totems. Throughout his career he played in a variety of leagues from the NHL to USHL. Probably the most interesting fact for me personally was his stint with the Vancouver Canucks (WHL) in 1952-53. This was a pretty cool fact to stumble across and this pretty much sealed the deal.

As you can see the card is from the 2006-07 Between the Pipes set by ITG and rings in around 12 bucks BV (not graded). Does the fact that it's graded make this card even more valuable BV wise? To me it really doesn't make a difference because I did the rare act and purchased this about the BV price. You could say I really fell in love with this card. What's there not to like? A Hall-of-Fame goaltender from over half a century ago, along with his personal on card signature and graded "mint" on top of that? I'll take this card any day of the week.

Francis in net along side Bill Gadsby on the right.

This picture is basically why Francis is in the Hall-of-Fame. He was in inducted in 1982 as a builder. In 1945 Emile was the first goalie to wear a baseball glove with a protective cuff at the wrist. Before that, goalies would were the same gloves as their team mates! Could you imagine that in the modern NHL? Goalies would have broken hands and fingers every other night. Thanks Emile!

I believe this is the exact photo that was put onto the card. "The Cat" was a back-up goalie with the Rangers after being the primary keeper in Chicago.

Finally for those of you old enough to remember (which I certainly cannot attest to) Francis was also a coach. He coached the OHA's Guelph Royals, the NY Rangers ('65-'75) and the St. Louis Blues. He was also the GM of the Hartford Whalers from 1979-1988.

Overall this card will now act as a centre piece for my collection. It's one of those rare cards from an era I can only really imagine and it makes me appreciate this great games history. If it wasn't for guys like Emile "The Cat" Francis, who knows what our NHL would be like?

WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Part 7)

PLEASE LEAVE COMMENT STATING WHAT DAY 2011-12 SCORE IS RELEASED!
THANKS!

If you've been following my recent eBay pick-ups you'll know that I've blown through by first 25 dollar pre-paid Visa card pretty quickly and I'm working my way through the second. This is my first pick-up from my second card.

In my opinion this is the biggest steal I purchased value wise. Take a look:

As you can see this card adds a little extra flair to my GU collection. Nazem is considered a top prospect in the Maple Leafs organization. Like I said this card is probably the biggest "profit gain" in a card. I got this card for a whopping $4.07 and the book rings this in somewhere around the 15 dollar mark. It's also numbered to only 200 copies.

What really attracted me to this card was the set, player and yes even the swatch. Even though it's an all white piece of jersey, the size of the swatch makes up for it. My pet peeve is how sometimes cards include pieces the size of a dime.

With this beauty here's where I am in card number 2:

WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Part 6) The Last of Card Number 1

Like I mentioned awhile back, when I originally got a 25 dollar gift card as a present I bought a second. This is the last purchase from the first card, it also get's me one step closer to finishing up an important goalie for my project.

In Part 1 of this new segment I showed you my first Curt Ridley card to enter into my collection. This is the second, and as you can see this is his RC. Getting 30+ year old cards in the mail is really neat, I get to see stuff I never would see if I only collected modern cards. I really appreciate the feel these cards have and the characters and interesting facts they show!

WHAT DOES 25 BUCKS GETCHA? (Part 5) - Going Old School

Like the title suggests, this is a throwback purchase from eBay. I'm starting to go on a 70's kick and experimenting between Topps and O-Pee-Chee. So far I'm partial to OPC cuz they're Canadian (ya I played that card).

First off, these cards are in some pretty rough shape. Brutal shape to be honest, you'll see what I mean pretty quickly.

I purposely cropped this picture past the borders just to show how "dinged" up these corners are. Obviously there are also huge creases going through his face and a nice stain on the bottom on the "Vancouver" part. But let's stop with the negatives and look at the big positives in this card. It's the classic  pink background and it's of a goalie that ain't easy to find in a 'Nucks jersey. Very happy to snap away this very important first Hodge card in my collection. This will fit well in a nice new sheet in my Goalie Project. Now onto more negatives about this card...take a look at the back.

Hey so can someone tell me what year Charlie was born from this card? Nope? How bout his weight? You can't tell that either? Maybe some stats or a quick write up. Sorry Amigo, it seems that you have to be Sherlock freaking Holmes to figure this one out. Literally half the card is ripped completely out! This is actually really disappointing considering this might have fallen high in my Top 60.

This wasn't the card I originally bought the lot for, but Dale Tallon RC's are always welcome into my collection. Again it's evident that this card isn't pristine but Tallon was a beast in the Canucks organization and I'm a happy camper.

Also, this card is in the best shape out of the three. Only thing that is wrong (besides ruined corners and creases) is the pen mark of "Senoly" on the back. Anyone speak Italian and can tell what the eff "Senoly" means?

Ray Cullen was the last card in the lot. Nice card to pocket as kind of an extra.

There's definitely a tear in the middle of the card. But at least I can see most of it and know that he was born in '41.

Okay so the big question now is how much did I pay for these incredibly poor conditioned cards? Well let me say now, if I had been outbid even once I would have closed up shop. But I got this without throwing any fists around so let's be happy about that. Oh and no I didn't know the cards were this bad, the seller kinda tricked me with his description. But I hardly payed the price of a Tim Horton's coffee so I didn't report it.
