PACK RIP - Hat Trick of Certified

A trip to my LCS shop this afternoon scored me three fresh packs of Certified. It seems like as long as I  buy two packs, I'm guaranteed something good. After these three packs, I still can't complain.

I'll spare you all the base cards and just show the bulk of them in one scan:

My first Canucks base card from all these packs (I think) is of Henrik Sedin.

The regular GU jersey cards are nothing to write home about, but not bad as a set. It all depends on player selection. Boy oh boy, did I get a good player...

Nick Lidstrom is a living legend and I'm sad to see him go. He was such a work horse for the Wings throughout his years and truly a household name. To me, pulling a Lidstrom hit is just as valuable as pulling a guy like Crosby. All class card.

 

Such a great insert idea and execution, and this card is the perfect example. The insert isn't called "Play-Off Rivals" it's called "Path to the Cup," which is a very smart move by Panini. Realistically, to get a good number of cards in a set that involves the play-offs, not all teams can be "rivals". Example A: Chicago and Phoenix; so by called the set "Path to the Cup" it eliminates the cheesiness factor and ups the ante. I particularly like the look of the back of the card with the scoreboard idea. Only thing I would change is the back pictures. Instead of re-using the same picture on the front, do a neat design with the two team logos; spice it up a bit.

Last but certainly not least is this SICK insert! It quite literally matches the name "Goalie Pulls" as the picture of Jimmy Howard is actually an acetate pull-out. Such a neat concept and really well executed! I think I might know a guy interested in it too...

DOUBLE PACK RIP: 2012-13 Certified

After hitting that sweet Taylor Hall/Adam Henrique Redemption from my first pack of Certified, I decided to try my luck two more times.

You know the expression "quit while you're ahead," well I guess you could say that about the next two packs. At the same time though, I'm not totally bummed with what I got; it's just that nothing is gonna beat that crazy dual AUTO.

On to pack numero uno:

Every pack contains five cards and this pack contained its standard four base cards. Like I said last time, I like the look of the cards. I'm not head over heels, but I think they're cool.

Nice! An autograph in my second pack! Looks like I'm two for two. All I can think of though is: I want a Canuck! So for the 11 bucks this pack cost me, I got me a no-namer. But hey, for me any signature (besides Mark Messier) is accepted with open arms in the good old collection. Don't know a whole lot about Cory, if their are any of his collectors out there, let me know! *cricket*




Alright, so now I already think I'm pushing my luck before even busting this third pack. But then again, it's a thick one... Decoy or GU card? Well I opened it up and saw the top of the thick card was white not the regular brownish colour most decoys are. Plus, it looked in good shape unlike the majority of decoys when you open the top of packs.

After brushing through these:

DECOY... Darn it.

But I did get this!

Numbered to /999 copies, this is a pretty cool insert. I really like the banner logo that says "Masked Marvels" and I actually like the fact it showed the goalie's mask as well as the top part of his jersey, I think it adds context to the card.

Overall not bad. More importantly, I'm not kicking myself over the money spent. Now if that first pack was all base, we might have had a different story...

VERSUS: Dan Cloutier Hit VS. 2012-13 Certified

Money in my pocket. Oh why do you taunt me?

With some pocket change to spare this week, I passed by my overpriced but extremely welcoming LCS to pick up some cards. I decided to pace myself...really I did! Of course, things don't always go as planned.

I was talking to the husband (it's a husband and wife that own this shop) and he was telling me one day when I have more time to stop in to see the massive binder of Cloutier cards he has. I agreed and asked him to quickly show me some of his GU and AUTO's of my favourite player.

Turns out he had two on hand. One was an AUTO from the most recent BTP (the one I already have) and the other was a high serial numbered GU card of his.

I asked the price of the GU piece of cardboard and to my utter shock it was a whole 20 bucks! No way José, he knew I wasn't gonna pay anywhere near that price. He then brought it right down to it's BV of 15 bucks.

I politely said "I was thinking more like 5." He smiled and said we could package something up. In the end I bought one pack of Certified and the Cloutier card at a clean 20 bucks total. Perfect for another edition of "VERSUS!"

So let the battle begin:

DAN CLOUTIER HIT

Like I said, high numbered GU card. It's pretty basic and I believe on eBay I could have probably nabbed it for 3.99 plus shipping, but the owners a nice guy. I think that's what it's all about in the end, meeting stand up guys and gals in the hobby. 

What I really like about this card though is actually the info on the back. It says "In 2003-04, Dan wore this Canucks sweater and recorded his 100th win." Now that's cool! 

To think that this jersey is actually a hallmark in Cloutier's career is crazy!

This ten bucks was well spent, but did it beat out my single pack of Certified?

2012-13 CERTIFIED

This one pack out of ten was a long shot for anything good, but for ten bucks it was worth the gamble; and boy was it worth it!

I won't get into the base cards too much, but I like them. I'm not going crazy over them, but I do think they are really cool. It may not seem like this in the scan but you can see the background through the foil. 

The BIG hit of the pack was this beauty...or soon to be beauty!

My very first redemption! I'm not sure why I'm excited because these things are a huge pain in the arse, but hey it's my FIRST ONE! 

Now let's dissect this bad boy. It's a DUAL Signature numbered to 100 copies and the player selection is of the Adam Henrique and Taylor Hall variety.

WOWZA! This is gonna be a good one!

I already redeemed it via paniniamerica.net and I put my time frame as 4 months. So hopefully this card shows up before then. 

My question is should I raise the time frame to 8 months (if possible)? What do you guys think, from experience, will be the time frame between my redeeming it online until I see it in my mailbox?

By any means this 10 dollar pack of cards get's a well deserved high mark of...

This was certainly a fun one!

Because of that redemption goodness, I bought two more packs of the 2012-13 Certified product.

HOCKEY CUBE BREAK - Last Three Packs

This is a long overdue post of the last three packs from my hockey cube I bought back in the summer. Now that I'm home for the day and it's raining cats and dogs outside I decided to take some time to write. It's much nicer writing when you can be warm inside all cozy, I can't wait for winter and hopefully some snow!

But I digress, first up is a pack of MVP from the 2006-07 season (I think it's that season).

This is a really nice looking low end set; modern, sleek and eye-catching. I know MVP's big idea is the facsimile AUTO's but for me, they just don't work. I think the set would look a lot better as a whole without the fake signatures.

I guess you could say the "HIT" of the pack is the Tim Comboy RC. You'd be right, and I might be excited if it wasn't for the fact that I don't know who the hell Tim Comboy is. 

NEXT!

Okay so it gets better... A mid end product from 2006-07 with a chance of "AUTOGRAPHED ROOKIE PATCH CARDS (numbered to 599 or less)!" Golly-gee this has to get me something good right?

Well not exactly... The base cards aren't bad looking and I didn't get bad names by any means but, no patch card. Wasn't like I was expecting it anyways, but one can dream right?

I did get this nice little RC though...

Now that's a name I know! Seeing Grabovski in Canadiens gear is odd but I have yet to acquire a RC from the man so this is a welcomed addition. That space below the picture where the team logo is must be where the signature goes for the signed copies. In this regular RC though, it seems like a waste of space.

Last up is the 1997-98 Pinnacle BAP set. This pack of card boasts an AUTO a pack which would guarantee my second of two AUTO's promised in the hockey cube. The first of which was a nice little signature of Matt Calvert from 2011-12 Score "Rookies and Traded".

Obviously my AUTO from the pack was the above scanned Craig Johnson. I don't know a whole heck of a lot about Craig, so I wasn't all that excited in pulling him. But hey, it's an autograph I didn't have before so it's always a positive.

For the twenty bucks I spent on this hockey cube it provided a nice quick little hockey card fix and I picked up a couple nice AUTO's in the process. Well worth it in my books!

DOUBLE PACK RIP - SpX and Contenders Hockey

Summer has finally hit Vancouver, and right when it does, I'm packing up to leave. I'm not too sad though, me and my family are leaving for two weeks to California (LA, Palm Springs)! So I guess these past few sunny days were a precursor to the real heat down there.

Anyways, back to hockey cards. Two weeks ago I went to my LCS and decided to test a few products I've yet to rip. Although I can't afford buying boxes of all these new products, I try my best to buy at least one pack of every new thing that comes out. On that days menu was SpX and Contenders (UD vs. Panini).

I've seemed to have pretty decent luck pulling some decent and even great cards this year from packs and boxes. I plan to do a full recap at the end of the hockey card season, but the last time I picked up two single packs I got a Tim Erixon RC AUTO from Elite and a Gilles Gilbert AUTO from BTP. Would I keep that roll going?

Starting with SpX...

Alright so when I originally saw scans online I thought these cards looked pretty cool. In person though, they are probably one of my least favourite designs for a mid-high range product this year. The square nuisance of gold foil where the team logo appears is gaudy at best. The players buckets are cut off and for some reason the font that says "SPX 2011-12" is bigger than the players name.

The back design is the same as the front minus the foil. The backs are bearable in my opinion, but still needs improvement. As for the actual last card in the pack it was...

...a foil covered "Legends" hockey card. Foil can be great and hell in some instances a card can be completely covered in foil and look good (Saving Face insert set) BUT not in this case. Even though this card is numbered to /499 and contains the presence of a great hockey player, it still doesn't resonate well with me.

On to the other pack and here's hoping it's better...it's not...

This could be a really cool product if Panini had executed it correctly. The untouched full picture design for a hockey card is a cool idea and team colours work very well with that. Unfortunately, the untouched, borderless picture affect didn't turn out great. It's like the information bar on the bottom is glossy and nice and the actual picture is flat and matte finished. If they had used better photos, glossed the entire fronts, did some small border and gotten rid of the Conference logos these cards could have potential. 

The backs are a complete wreck. They look so grungy and 90-ish and just plain boring. This product had some really neat AUTO's and GU cards though and that is what really carried it because the base cards are just plain bad! In particular I like the all black cards with the silver AUTO, sometimes they include a patch. As well those three die-cut puzzle cards that make a line of information make me drool every time! 

Do you think I pulled either one of those?!

Nope! What the hell is a Cup Contender anyways? The line-up in this parallel set is ridiculous and just a bad excuse for cardboard. Rookie Contenders I get, but I do not get this! What an awful feeling pulling this piece of work!

So about 16 bucks later, I ended up with 7 base cards and two high serial numbered cards. Awesome work Michael, maybe next time you can just throw your money directly into the trash...

Anyways, like I said I'm leaving for vacation Wednesday but if I get the certain card I'm waiting for in the mail tomorrow than look for another post tomorrow night. If not see you guys in another 2 weeks and enjoy your summer!

HOCKEY CUBE - 2006-07 Beehive (Pack Rip) and Other Random Cards

Continuing along with this hockey cube I picked up a little over a month ago, today Ill be showing a rather uneventful pack rip of a product I actually do like. As the title mentions that is 2006-07 Bee Hive produced by Upper Deck.

Just thought I'd scan the wrapper to maybe trigger any past memories of busting this stuff. Inside were four cards and I was not lucky enough to get that one out of eight packs with that Bee Hive Rookie. Instead you could probably guess what I pulled...

Yup, four base cards...yipee! But I do particularly enjoy the bordered design of these cards. You don't see this sort of thing in today's products.

Where the design loses me is the back. I like that they went with a sepia/black and white colour scheme but the actual design of the card doesn't flow well from front to back. If you put the front of one card next to the back of another I would never guess they come from the same product.

If I were UD I would have continued the border on the back and have full career stats. I do really like the "Did You Know?" bubble but if it were along the side in a box kinda like old OPC cards it would have been more symmetrical like the front and less cluttered.

Unfortunately, I have no say in the design process so I'm just gonna have to deal with it.

On to some other random cards. Also included in the hockey cube was a pack of cards I had never seen before and I wish to never see again.

These cards are UG-A-LY! I can smell the cheese oozing off of these card designs. They from the early 90's and feature players from different QMJHL teams. No thanks, next please...

The "Cube" promised 200 hockey cards so that meant after the 5 packs and the Score Rookies and Traded box there were still cards to be fulfilled. So the company throws in a number of random base cards etc. Mostly from the junk wax era...scratch that...ALL from the junk wax era. But, that doesn't mean there weren't some interesting cards.

As you can see above, there is a Chris Gratton RC, as well as a base of recent HHOF inductee Adam Oates. Some neat goalie shots of Barrasso and Riendeau. Last but not least, Modano in a North Stars jersey as well as the most annoying "hockey analyst" Nick Kypreos. These are just a few of the 40 or so cards in the cube.

I already have a copy of the Linden and the Quinn as well as the Young, but hey why not throw them in the Canucks binder and my Goalie Project binder? The Babych is a nice card, he was part of the Canucks run in 1994 and I had a great experience meeting him at a Canucks game once upon a time.

PACK RIP - 2011-12 Between the Pipes (An AUTO from the 70's)

It's hard to believe its been a week already, I have a enormous video project due for my Francais 12 class and I am positive it will be the death of me! Anyways, a couple weeks back I picked up a pack of this years rendition of BTP.

When the store clerk picked one pack out for me from the 2/3 filled box of cards I was really hoping for a GU card or an AUTO and if not that, than an insert or one of the few Dan Cloutier cards there are in this years product.

I ended up coming out with a pretty nice AUTO but, before we take a look at that, let's see the variety of base I pulled:

Each of these six cards come from a different subset in the base (Expansion Tandems, Stars of the Game, Future Stars, 70's, 80's, 90's) so it looks like I'm missing just three subsets (00's, La Belle Province and Stars and Stripes). 

My luck that day got me one nice looking AUTO from the 70's, take a look...

One word. Classy. Now that's how you sign a hockey card! Gilles is more recognized for his time in Boston but he also played a couple decent years with Detroit. Everything about that signature is proper and well done. Good on ya Gilles! Thanks for giving me hope for some of these younger hockey players to improve their signatures.

On another note, I was down in the States yesterday and a quick stop at Target and a 20 dollar bill got me this bad boy:

It's a hockey value cube! To the left is a small box of the "Rookies and Traded" update set of Score and to the right are four packs of cards along with a bunch of valueless base to bring the total of cards to 175. The cube promises two AUTO's so keep a watch around here to see what I got!

PACK RIP - 2011-12 Elite

Elite is another mid range product that has recently been released by Panini. Although it seems to fall behind the recent releases of Between the Pipes and SpX, I still managed to pick up one lone pack just to appease my appetite.

This years Panini Elite product comes with 5 cards in a single pack and 20 packs per box. The odds of me pulling anything good aren't fantastic but at the same time, it is doable.

Let's take a look at what I got:

These cards reflect dust on my scanner like no other product can. These things are drenched in foil (a la Panini) and are prone to finger prints. Although a lot of people have been complaining about the design, I don't mind it personally. It's simple and it sticks to its 90's roots. 

The fifth card of the pack was this:

Man my scanner is dusty. Anyways, this AUTO is of the rookie variety and comes from Tim Erixon. Or if you are going by the signature it's of "TiEix". Obviously code. 

I really like the choice of colour for the border and how the ink of the AUTO matches the border! I think this is a really nice looking card, especially with the blue, white and red of the Rangers jersey.

So no Canucks in the pack but a solid rip nonetheless. Any good/bad feedback you want to release off your mind about the product? Feel free to let me know how you feel in the comment box below. Any success with pack/box rips lately?

Pack Rip - Canucks Mystery Lot

My splurging on eBay has been strong and steady and although my next purchase is one that might see "out there", I'm glad I pulled the trigger. Saying that, this lot did come with a risk. The lot promised either a patch, jersey, auto, rookie or the dreaded serial numbered hit. So for $12 all in, I took the risk of getting the pack with a card numbered to /4999999999 and having that be the "hit" of the lot. Thankfully that was not the case and I actually got MORE than previously expected.

Let's start with a little taste of base:

As you can see from these first two base cards, there was a very wide variety of products, year and players. I already have the McLean but of course any card for my Goalie Project is accepted with open arms.

Continuing on here we have a "Gold Medallion" parallel from the Fleer Ultra set. I'm pretty sure these were inserted 1 a pack so nothing too special to write home about here. Plus a Big Bert base!

Woah there! That is a hell of a lot of colour all on one scan! From left to right we have one of the most trippy base cards out there from "Pacific Revolution". The middle card was NOT my "hit" card of the lot, but it is technically a RC. Finally all the way on the right is an OPC "Season Highlights" from when Luongo was actually considered a saviour in Vancouver. 

Hey look another rookie! This time of someone I actually really do like - Jannik Hansen! This is definitely a cool RC, and even though I already have a RC of Jannik, this one is different. The Naslund insert is a pretty sharp looking card too.

Next is only ONE hit I got from this mystery lot. Let's take a gander...

Not bad, but nothing to write home about. Steve Kariya never really made it big in the NHL and I have an absolute boatload of his RC's sitting in binders so why not have an autographed card of his right? So far the pack hasn't been a complete disappointment but it hasn't knocked my socks off either and definitely isn't worth my 12 bucks.

But then...

I saw this...

Okay so it's no patch card or super low serial numbered but hey, it's a piece of Henrik Sedin's jersey! That's a-okay in my eyes anytime! Plus it's not an all white swatch, which is always nice. With this card being of a former Art Ross winner, you can't go wrong. Oh and he's also the captain of my Vancouver Canucks!

So I would say this pack was pretty successful. A couple cards toward my Goalie Project, two rookies, a GU card and an AUTO. 

As for more hockey card news, let's just say, there is a lot. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've picked up a ton of new GU and AUTO's. Some from packs, some from eBay and some from trades. I can't wait to get them all scanned and ready to go!
