BEAR V GREEN MEN

I was scanning NHL.com and came across this interesting battle before the war.

Green Men v Bruins Bear

I couldn't find a compilation of all of the Green Men's finest but these are up there as three of my favorites. You know the other ones...Carrie Underwood cut-out, Vince Vaughn cut-out etc. etc.

The very funny Bruin Bear that does his little jig after a series win. I love it!

So now it's up to you who wins? Green Men or Bruin Bear?

Drop me a comment.

STANLEY CUP FINAL PREDICTIONS

Here we are. May 30th, 2011. A mere 48 hours exactly before game 1 for Lord Stanley. Unless you've been in Thailand or Madagascar living under a rock with no 4G access on your phone lately, you know the two last teams are: the Boston Bruins and the Vancouver Canucks. Yes, my Vancouver Canucks. Yes, it's been seventeen years since our last run to the Stanley Cup finals. 1994 was one year before I was born and the likes of Bure, Linden, McLean, Courtnall, Adams etc. are memories only the internet and television can create in my mind. I finally am able to live the dream. Well, almost...we still have 4 wins left.

Before I get to what I like to call "the numbers" I'll break down last rounds correct guesses and see how good or bad I've been thus far.

Vancouver v San Jose
Prediction: Nucks in 7
Real Life: Nucks in 5
1 for 1

Tampa Bay v Boston
Prediction: Tampa in 7
Real Life: Boston in 7
1 for 2

Round 1, 2 and 3 totals: 9 for 14 (64%)

Okay so not too bad. I had a really good first round going 7 for 8. A terrible second round going 1 for 4. And finally a split round going 1 for 2. One great thing I can take out of my predictions is that I've predicted the Canucks to win all three series and they have.

So who do you think I'll pick to win sport's ultimate prize?

Vancouver v Boston
Prediction: Vancouver in 7

At the beginning of the season EA Sports predicted Vancouver to win the Stanley Cup in 7 games against the Boston Bruins. They have been correct 12 out of 13 times. They did the same simulation again today with all new injuries, trades etc. Guess what? Vancouver in 7 to win the cup. It's a sign!

Okay, so now comes "the numbers" part of the post. I basically took this article, put this into my words and slapped a GO NUCKS GO! at the bottom and called it mine. Kinda like what I do at school.

0 - Stanley Cups for Vancouver in their 40 year history
1 - Goal allowed in 3 starts against Vancouver for Timmy Thomas
5 -  Consecutive Stanley Cup Final losses for the Bruins
7 - Consecutive game 1 wins for the Canucks
11-10-3 - Luongo's record against Boston in 24 starts
14 - Points between their points in the regular season. Vancouver (117) and Boston (104)
19 - Years since a team has won the cup after going 7 games in the first round. This streak will be broken no matter who wins
39 - Years since Boston has won the cup
182 - Play-off games for Recchi
148, 633 - Hours since June 14th, 1994 to the puck drop 5 o'clock June 1st. The Canucks lost in game 7 against the New York Rangers 8, 917, 980 minutes ago.

There it is. Probably the biggest news for the Canucks leading up to puck drop is that Manny Malhotra has gotten the green light to play in game 1 with a full visor on.

Without further ado...

JUMBO CARDS - LOVE OR HATE?

When you see a box or tin saying "Jumbo card inside!" do you get excited? Would you pay that extra 2 bucks for that one extra piece of crap fun? Most lower end sets will give you a jumbo card as extra incentive. For example, Ovation...

Victory has also been known to throw in jumbo cards in blasters and tins...

Personally, I see no point in owning these cards. I guess they are neat to have but there is no sense for me to grab these cards as singles. Although, I do have a few jumbo cards I enjoy but for other reasons.

As I've mentioned before on c4k sometimes I'll get some special packages from the Canucks organization for being a season ticket holder. A few years ago they sent me 6 jumbo hockey cards of former Canucks.

Remember these guys? The silky version of the jumbo cards.

Of course though, nothing makes a jumbo card better than a signature of a childhood favorite. Whether it's a mascot or a Canucks goalie!

I guess this could count as a Cloutier card in the Goalie Project.

PACK RIP: 2010-11 SpX

As mentioned before I have a single pack of the newest version of SpX to rip. SpX and I have a love hate relationship, I love the look of the cards but hate the price and what so far it has given to me. Ever since a few years ago when packs were 10 bucks a pop, SpX has left a sour taste in my mouth. Me and my buddies went down to our LCS strictly to open 2 packs each of SpX. Naturally, I pulled all base with my 2 packs and 20 bucks. My friends both got hits. One got a GU auto, the other a GU card. Of course, they were ecstatic. Of course, I was not. Ever since then my packs have been less than successful but for some reason I keep on coming back.

My most recent trip to the LCS brought me simply for supplies. I had to hold myself back from buying anything. I needed top loaders and those 4 rowed boxes for base cards. Unfortunately, they only had the 2 rowed boxes. As a gratuity, the lady gave me a free pack of SpX. When she said that, I was shocked. "A nine dollar pack?" I thought. I quickly figured out that the pack she offered me was the last of the hobby box and that she probably knew nothing spectacular was within it. This left me in a difficult situation, do I take the cards knowing I will probably pull nothing and thus leave a worst taste of the SpX product in my mouth? Or do I kindly say "that's okay, I wouldn't want to take cards for free" and pass the opportunity? I quickly came back to my senses and thought "why are you even considering this, it's a free pack man, take it!" I thankfully took the pack with a smile and opened it at home.

First I pulled 3 base cards. Since I figured I wasn't gonna pull any GU AUTO RC I thought I might pull a Canuck - nope. Besides that, the cards are so cool. I don't know what it is about SpX and why I like it so much. It just looks so modern and sleek and well...cool. I really like the subtle gold foil in the team logo and SpX logo as well as the name.

Foil really brings out the dust in my scanner. But hey! This isn't too bad! I was pleasantly surprised to see a SpX Finite RC. When I originally saw the Carolina jersey I was hoping it was Jeff Skinner, but instead I got Zac Dalpe. Dalpe has played 15 games for the Hurricanes this season and has recorded 4 points. This season in the AHL with the Charlotte Checkers Zac played 61 and games and recorded 57 points.

The Zac Dalpe SpX Finite rookie is numbered to /499 because it's a Level 1 rookie. You can find SpX Finite RC's 1 in every 38 packs on average (1:38). The mist coming up from the bottom reminds me a lot of the SP Authentic cards. I like the simple design of SP authentic cards. Simple is a nice break from all the out of the box designs that are around today.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS - WESTERN CONFERANCE CHAMPS!!!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

You knew it was coming! For just the third time in team history, the Vancouver Canucks have made their way to the Stanley Cup Finals! 17 years from this day they did just that. I'm 16 and unfortunately wasn't even born yet, now I can finally enjoy the celebration!

Thank you Vancouver! This is truly what we live for!

PACK RIP: 2007-08 BTP (Goalie Project) + Redemption Points

Before I was able to tear into my box of Between the Pipes a few days ago, I had to wait about 5 hours until my dad got home with the package just sitting in front of me. It was torture! Fortunately, my seller included an extra pack of 2007-08 Between the Pipes for the prior confusion. So for about 30 seconds I was able to be distracted away from the unopened box. The pack included 5 cards (1 of which was a redemption of "He Shoots-He Saves" thingy) the other four were all base.

It was nice getting a recognizable name in the bunch. Tuukkkkaaaa

The other base card was a Great of the Game card. It also happened to be a former Canuck, and that just so happens to be what I'm looking for. So this inspired another Goalie Project post featuring Mr. Felix Potvin.

Potvin was never a goalie I deliberately collected or even pulled from packs. I got most of these cards from big Canucks lots off the Bay. Eventually my Potvin collection turned into a beast with countless base cards. Above are a couple scans of base cards of "The Cat". The first are ones of him in Vancouver, the bottom are ones from various other teams.

Yup, that's the touchdown, the home run, the hat trick. In "Goalie Project" terms that means I've completed this goalie. Three for three. Above are a couple of Felix' rookie cards from his time in T.O.

That was easy. But what is next is not so easy. I've decided to go for the "He Shoots-He Saves" redemption program from 2010-11 BTP. I need 200 of these bad boys:

From my one box I've collected 16 of them. I've scoped out eBay and found a couple auctions that I will go in on soon enough. Anyways, before I go off to what is the vicious circle of eBay I was wondering one thing. The back of the card states once you collect 200 and ship them off, ITG will ship back one of 30 cards numbered to /20. My question is, what if after you send them in, it's recognized that no cards are left? I've never done any redemptions before so you know better than me. Any which way, if you have the points above and if you don't want them anymore or want to trade them away - let me know!

Lastly, WE ARE ONE WIN AWAY! Yes, me and my buddies went to red robins to watch the game and it was great. There's nothing like winning off of 3 consecutive 2 man advantages. Anyways, I'm hoping the Canucks can push through Tuesday and get her done!

With that being said...

2010-11 Between the Pipes BOX BREAK + GOALIE PROJECT

Like I mentioned yesterday it's time for my most anticipated box break of the year. Yup, Between the Pipes baby! After my first box suddenly disappeared from UPS' gong show, the seller sent me another box that I am very pleased I received. Three weeks later I finally got to open my box. I'm gonna stop messing around and show you what I got. We start with the Future Stars base cards.

Eddie Lack plays for the Canucks farm team - the Manitoba Moose. He's the only "Canucker" I got in the Future Stars batch. I also got guys like Malcolm Subban, Olivier Roy and Jordan Binnington.

Future Stars: 61
Manitoba Moose: 1

I pulled one of the two Canucks of the Stars of the Game base cards. Bobby Lu, how do you do?

Stars of the Game: 38
Canucks: 1

There are some awesome names in the Greats of the Game base cards. I received 4 former Canucks that will help with my Goalie Project. Some of the pictures on the base cards are a little fuzzy especially on the Greats of the Game but it's a small price to pay for such an awesome set.

Greats of the Game: 29
Former Canucks: 4

Cool idea giving the Women some love. I appreciate the pink but the symbols faded in are kinda corny. In my one box, I got all four base cards of the Women of the Nets.

Women of the Nets: 4 (Complete)

Awesome, awesome, awesome! Love the Immortals base cards!

Immortals: 5

The only card in this One Game Wonder base card "set". Tom Fenton congratulations you made the cut.

One Game Wonder: 1 (Complete)

Now to the really good stuff. Inserts, autos and GU! I got 4 inserts including 2 masked men.

This Johnny Bower insert is sweet, love the look of the throwback cigarette cards. As for the other insert, I could do without this one and I would much rather have one of those Deep in the Crease cards. Now here are the much anticipated Masked Men III cards.

Both their masks are not amazing by any means, but this card could make any mask look good. Emeralds are out of /340 not 1/1 in case you didn't know...but you probably already know. Great cards, don't think I'm gonna complete the set but I'll definitely hold on to these.

Opening my first pack I peeked behind my "He Shoots-He Scores" point card and I saw a grey/greenish design. I knew right away that it was my first auto! I was even happier knowing it was a Stars of the Game auto and was relieved to know I wouldn't be closing the box with two Future Star autos. As you can see it is a rather sweet auto from Khabibulin. As Don Tayler would say: "Did he save it with his right Khabby, or his right Bulin?" Not sure if anyone outside of Vancouver knows what I'm talking about, but just go along with it. Awesome! Very happy with the auto, it looks fantastic. But that isn't my favorite auto of the box, it get's better!

Hellz ya! Kirk McLean, original '94! Sweeeeeet! This guy was a beast of a goalie for the Canucks in their run to the Stanley Cup finals! Cannot even put my happiness into words! My favorite card in this box, but there was a decently close second.

Yup, 3 autos! It's a hat trick baby. I don't know a whole bunch about Frederic Piche, but through the wonders of Google I assume that he won't be cracking an NHL line-up anytime soon. If you know anything about this guy I'd appreciate some info.

How could a box possibly go wrong with a Martin Brodeur hit! This is the closest a card got to topping the McLean auto. Crazy card indeed! Sorry about the fluff on the bottom of the card, I need to dust my scanner. This card is numbered 1 out of 80 (Black Version).

Again, sorry for the quality of the scan, those smudges and fluff's you see are from the scanner. I assure you the cards are pristine. This was the last hit of the box that I pulled from the last pack of the box. On the NHL's scouting central report of the 2011 NHL entry draft, Jordan Binnington is ranked 3rd out of all North-American goalies and 1st out of all OHL goalies. It will be very interesting to see where and when he goes in the draft and also how his career unfolds. I'll hold on to this one for a while. Nice looking swatch also, a lot of black and a bit of yellow in the bottom right corner. Also on the bottom you can see this is the Silver version. I have no clue what the Silver versions are numbered to, if you know let me know please.

So that's it! Here's how the box breaks down:

Base: 138 (69% complete)
Inserts: 4
Autos: 3
GU: 2
TOTAL: 147 cards

This was a huge box for my collection. My total GU cards I owned before this was 2, and I doubled that to 4. Like I mentioned before, please let me know what the print run on the Jordan Binnington card is, and any background you have on Frederic Piche. What do you think about the box? For myself, it was awesome, maybe for you this wasn't your taste, let me know. Along with an all goalie product, comes many additions to the Goalie Project.

Coming up this week are a couple pack rips. One of an older Between the Pipes product and another 2010-11 SpX. Now I have to stop blogging and start watching the Canucks game intently, they need all the help they can get with them being down 3-0 mid-way through the 2nd.

QUICKY

A couple of random thoughts to appease the appetite for those that read my blog. First, my Canucks are on quite the tear at the moment. They were able to chase the Sharks out of Vancouver convincingly Wednesday night winning 7-3. Thanks Ben Eager, you always provide inspiration to kick your ass no matter where you are. I find it sad how he decides to stand over our goalie and bad mouth Lu when he scored the Sharks third goal to make it 7-3. Just don't get it, your down 4 goals, why you gotta do that? I think the Canucks biggest problem in game 3 will be over confidence. Sharks are going to come out hard on home ice and we need to shut down the crowd and more importantly the game. Best wishes to the Canucks tomorrow.

Secondly, after over 3 weeks of waiting I FINALLY got my 2010-11 Between the Pipes box in from eBay. The first box they sent me got lost so they shipped this one out to me. I'm VERY happy I got this box anyways. I don't wanna give too much away but I ended up with 5 hits. I can say one of those is a Canuck! For the full details, I will break down the box tomorrow. Sooooo...stay tuned tomorrow afternoon for that!

ROUND 3 PREDICTIONS

I've been commenting and entering contests about the outcomes of the Eastern and Western Conference finals everywhere but if you haven't seen what I think will happen, now's your chance. First though, let's see how I did with my Round 2 predictions.

Vancouver v Nashville
Prediction: Nucks in 5
Real Life: Nucks in 6
1 for 1

San Jose v Red Wings
Prediction: Wings in 7
Real Life: San Jose in 7
1 for 2

Washington v Tampa Bay
Prediction: Caps in 6
Real Life: Bolts in 4
1 for 3

Philly v Boston
Prediction: Philly in 7
Real Life: Bruins in 4
1 for 4

Round 1 and 2 totals: 8 for 12 (67%)

After going a pretty crazy 7 for 8 in the first round, I dropped the ball in the second. The only series I got correct was the Canucks series (which is the series that counts for me, so I can't be mad). Now on to my Conference final predictions.

Vancouver v San Jose
Prediction: Nucks in 7

Boston v Tampa Bay
Prediction: Tampa in 7

Hopefully I can go 2 for 2 this round and if not at least get the Canucks into the finals. I'm seriously concerned for my Canucks against the Sharks. San Jose seems to blow when it comes to play-off time but, if Joe and Marleau show up like they did in game 7, the Canucks will have a problem on their hands. Although, you could say the same thing if the Sedins showed up so it goes both ways.

THE GOALIE PROJECT - Hedberg/Bannerman (Part 1)

We're looking at yet another round of my favorite project! Today we are looking at a back-up goalie from the Cloutier era and a goalie that is not known for his time in Vancity. First on the docket, is Johan Hedberg. Let's take a look at his Canuck cards.

Bee hive cards are always cool and the Save-on-Foods cards were "hot" cards around my elementary school at the time.

No Hedberg rookie cards but here are a couple of his cards from years not in Canucks gear.

Next is a goaltender whose mask is known by most goal tending fans - Murray Bannerman. His mask is iconic and if you want to see even more on it check out bamlinden's famous Rate My Mask postings.

As you can see from the back of the card, Bannerman's Canucks career didn't last very long. In fact, the "1 GP" doesn't tell the entire story. What does is the "20 mins" stat right beside it. At least Murray didn't give up a goal in those 20 Canuck minutes. This is the only Bannerman card I have and I doubt I'll be finding a Murray Bannerman Canucks card anytime soon (if it even exists). If it does and you have it, drop me a comment and we'll work something out.
